Looked it up again on Google. I think we're both right.

No, sorry. Automatically when war is mentioned everyone has the same reaction - deaths in one form or another. What's the opposite? Which is what I was trying to get at when I said to come at it from the other direction to a comment by bixa. One partial answer is that these places don't have their own Remembrance service - because to have one you need what? - a memorial. Why don't they have one?

Okay, I have a guess:
Is the map showing home locations of personnel who were present at the signing of the armistice(s)? I'm assuming the "small town in Normandy" is Compiègne. http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/ind....lay&thread=4606
Am I even close?

Good guess bixa and well thought out, but errr....... no.
Kerouac, eventually gets it. I'll save you from further pain.
They are called the "Thankful Villages" (or Blessed Villages). The blue squares are villages that sent men to fight in WWI and had all return safely. The red squares are villages that sent men to fight in WWI and WWII and had all return - called "Doubly Thankful Villages".
No Scottish community appears to have been left unscathed, and no thankful villages have been identified in Ireland
The connection to a small village in Normandy is thus - The French equivalent of a thankful village is even more extraordinary. Thierville in Normandy has not lost any service personnel in France's last five wars - the Franco-Prussian war of 1870, World Wars I and II, Indochina, and Algeria.
The original map can be found at the bottom of this article from the BBC -

Mark, would I be correct in assuming that no Irish or Scottish villages were left unscathed because the English preferred to use the Irish and Scots as cannon fodder?

I really have no idea. Also if you look at Wales there are only two villages there that escaped. Previous to WWI the majority of deaths in an army came from not battle, but disease, due to poor diet or illnesses of one sort or another. WWI was a bit of a turning point in that due to better diet and medical care (even though poor by our standards now) about two thirds of recorded deaths were due to battle itself.
I could come up with various reasons as to why but they wouldn't be based on any facts, more just a general impression - one being that proportionally less English volunteered to fight initially until conscription came in (general conscription occurred mid 1916 for WWI and 1942 for WWII) thus proportionally 'weighting' the fighting forces with non Englanders.
Also it was a matter of pride for some to always be at the front of the fighting, the Scots particularly who were seen as very fierce fighters and even individual regiments like the Royal Welch (not a spelling mistake) who took part in the (in)famous Christmas 1914 football match. It could be their commanders pushed to be included in many conflicts.
As I say though, I've really no idea and suspect it wasn't really one cause, much a number of reasons.

Well that was fun! I just got on to see the answer to my question and saw our task resolved. Congratulations Kerouac! I read a lot of data that I would not have had done, so quite an educational assignment! Thank you Mark. Cheers, Mich

You're welcome Mich.
bixa, there are four in the county I know well. I know the villages and do remember that there was no memorial in a couple of them but it wasn't until seeing the BBC article I made the connection. I'd not heard of them referred to as Thankful Villages though.

If you look in Africa there are two small dots at the bottom. I know these countries have Kings. And so do the rest? (including Queens)

fumobici said earlier that the answer to mine was to be found on Google (though where and how beats me). I replied, "At least you admit to it. I wouldn't and pretend I was really clever."
I think that's what I just tried (but not using Google). I promise I wont do it again bjd. Honest.

I haven't a clue yet, but I always like to try to analyse countries that share the same level of things.
For example: United States, Canada, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Malaysia, etc. with the most...
France, China, Tunisia, Namibia, Thailand, Japan, Brazil, etc. at a different level.
A large part of Africa, Russia and Eastern Europe with the least...
Hmmm....
