For some reason, the following memory popped into my head today.

My friend and I were probably 9 years old, we desperately wanted make-up and our moms said NO.

So we walked to the chemist not far from our homes and told the lady behind the make up counter that we were in a school concert and would they like to donate make-up.

She gave us some samples, and a gentle smile and sent us on our way.

I think she knew that there was no concert, and I remember the eye shadow being the most vibrant blue I have ever seen.

The memory made me smile today.

Do you have any random memories to share?

Nice one pal !

We practised for a play at school where one of us (I think it was me) got arrested. I got handcuffs from my neighbour to use in the play. I took them to school but forgot the key at home. Of course the inevitable happened and me and my friend had the handcuffs on our wrists all of a sudden. We were then walking home togeter, passing by the police station where we asked for help. (The look in their faces was priceless!) Unfortunately they didn't use the same model so we had to go all the long way to my parents house. We must have looked really funny !

we had a mother sheep and three lambs for one summer. one of the lambs was male, and at some point discovered that he liked hitting people with his head (he didn't have horns yet)... one day i was supposed to sit in the back yard watch the sheep so they don't eat my mom's flowers, when he suddenly started jumping all funny and running towards me. i got very scared, but managed to catch him before he hit me. now, i didn't know what to do, so i straddled him (is that how you say that? like, so he was between my legs) and held the wool at his neck, holding him up so his front feet wouldn't touch the ground, making him unable to move. i was scared that if i let go, he'd turn around right away and attack me. so i started shouting for my parents to come and help me. unfortunately they were cutting something with a loud electric saw in the frontyard and couldn't hear me, i was standing there like this and shouting for help for about half an hour...

When I was about 4 or 5 years old, I was sleeping peacefully in my bed when something woke me up in the middle of the night. What on earth was inside my pyjamas? I turned on the light and yanked down my pyjama pants. There was a giant sub-tropical cockroach taking a walk over my private parts. I started screaming at the top of my lungs, and my mother was in my room within 5 seconds. If she had found a baseball bat along the way, I'm sure she would have brought it.

Once she saw the problem, she thought it was pretty funny. She made a big investigation of the bed and the sheets to make sure there were no other 'problems' and to reassure me, and I went back to sleep. However, for the next 10 years, we had regular visits by an exterminator because those Southeast USA cockroaches loved nothing better than coming inside the houses and making themselves at home.

My father was an avid fisherman, also dug for clams, bay scallops, had crab traps and eel pots(homemade contraption with a wooden frame covered in small mesh wire and had some cone shaped funnel that once the eel or eels swam in they couldn't get out. Anyway he came home one day with some fresh very alive blue eels. I watched him kill the eels and in order to do this he slammed the eels head onto a concrete slab. He was a very large man and he seemed to be using brute force. I'm trying to remember as I tell this whether or not he had some kind of gloves on to be able to keep a grip, but all i recall was his slamming these things down so hard. We had them for dinner that night.

when i was little i always wanted to run away and camp in a forest by a lake and hunt for my food and live an adventurous life. once my brother and i were planning to do just that, but since we were scared, we decided to start with the meadow across the street. we made tents out of sticks and blankets there, and stole cookies from home to eat. after a while my dad came to see whta we are doing. we told him we had run away from home, and he said "good. but you are back for dinner, okay?"

I remember when I was newly married my husband and I (by chance) went to a seaside town in Somerset. It was where I lived for the first 10 years of my life. I wanted to show him where i went to school. We drove to the location but the school had been demolished and flats had risen in its place. I was astounded when he said he had bought and 'developed' the site not long before. He was a property developer.

I have 2 memories, am not sure which one is the earliest. After investigation I learned that I was 3 years of age.

One is, I was under a bed crying because I couldnt see my father for a long time. It was 80's and army stroke was in the place, so they were arresting all the revolutionists and questionaring and even torturing them. I remember visiting my dad in the prison. He was released later.

Second, my mother is teaching me how to make bubbles out of gum. We both chewing gums and she is bubbling the gum and explaining slowly how to...Me doing it and she kissing me as a reward, and telling me something like 'good boy'.

Repertoire, it's nice that you have that pleasant memory to sort of balance out the awful, scary one.

This is one of my earliest memories: my grandmother had a red riding hood cape made for me. I remember being in the dressmaker's house, which was sort of dark, and preening in front of a pier glass. I was enthralled with the sight of myself in the cape. This was when I was around three years old.

the earliest memory i believe to have (not sure it is real) is being in daycare (the "krippe" which is a daycare for under three year olds), and around there are crying babies and i want to sleep and am annoyed at the crying. as i said, not sure if that is real though.

It's probably real, Rikita. I had to check that early memory of mine with my mother, & she recognized the house in the memory. I have a cousin who had a memory of a particular wallpaper. He told his mother and she was astonished. The paper was on the wall next to his crib when he was less than a year old.

My two earliest memories - that weren't preserved with photographs, so I believe they are actual memories - both revolve around deaths.

I remember the ambulance pulling up across the street when the older man who lived there died of a heart attack. I was about 5 years old.

For a long time I believed I also remembered my grandpa's burial. My mother said children were not brought to the cemetery, though. But I had the most vivid image of the place in my mind, and could picture the tented area with the coffin on a stand over the open grave.

The mystery was resolved just a couple years ago, when we visited the family plots in the graveyard in Barry County, Michigan, and I realized that the graves were in the wrong place. What I was remembering was probably a later visit to grandpa's grave during which someone else was being buried. I had a clear image in my mind of where in the cemetery that tent was in relation to a spigot where we probably got water for the flowers on grandpa's grave....

another one is when i started going to the proper daycare (for kids aged three and above) - and it was some special occasion for me, my birthday i think, so i thought everyone should give me a lot of attention. but there was this new kid, a really difficult boy who additionally had hearing aids... well the daycare workers seemed (according to my memory) to be all over him, and ignored me completely, so i felt treated very unfairly. well i guess it has a lot to do with how one sees things as a child though... anyway back then i thought it was the hearing aids that made that boy so special and interesting to everyone...

The past two weeks there have been a variety of blimps visiting the city because of the N.O. Jazz Fest. Most of them are other companies, haven't seen the Goodyear in quite some years. But every time I see one, actually,I hear them first, there is a particular low droning sound that's unmistakable,I am transported back in time to my 8th birthday.
There was a small private airport in Easthampton and my father used to take us there to watch the planes come and go.There were also wild blueberries nearby that we would go and pick much to my mother's delight.
Anyway,on this one particular day which happened to be my birthday my father and I went to the airport and the Goodyear blimp was anchored down there. My father talked to the pilot and he agreed to take us up for a ride. We ascended and floated all over the area for at least two hours, over my school, our house and along the seashore. It was one of the greatest thrills of my life.

I still remember my first day of school, which started with a boring mass at the church, and then we were assembled and marched down to the school by the scary nuns in giant cornets. The first grade teacher was Sister Elizabeth, a relatively young woman who was clearly uncomfortable with children but who tried to make the best of it. I remember that one little girl never stopped crying, and it embarrassed the rest of us who were trying to be stoic about our new life of daily imprisonment. Two desks ahead of mine on the right, a little girl was sitting as still as possible, and I watched a big pool of pee spreading around her feet. (I felt very superior, but little did I know that a few days later I would be shitting my pants.)

It is all still crystal clear in my mind.

scary... i apparently liked school for about the first half year. during that time, my mom claims, i always woke up with ease and happily said "school!" after about half a year though, when i had mastered reading, i pretty much thought i had learned everything i need to know, and would have preferred to sleep...
