Do post a spoiler though. I have very soft teef - severe cow's milk allergy as a small child and not the correct subsitutes there are nowadays - calcium, but not magnesium, zinc, vitamin D etc. Dental stuff drives me mad.

Me too. I haven't yet had the courage to take my saved 'roots' out of my handbag. The dentist put them in a little waterproof plastic black bag.

I will make an effort to look at them today and take a pic. It's the granular cyst appendage that's interesting..also the fact that the roots appear to be so small. The dentist said I have a small mouth and small teeth, relatively small. Hmmm......

Oh yes - after a painful first night (bruised gums I suspect) my mouth is now pain free and the hole in the gum is healing up. The infection is receding and will soon be cleared up. Perhaps soon I'll be bursting with energy

This is an update to say that I am feeling a lot better and stronger since that abcessed tooth was extracted. So my advice is - face the music and see a dentist if you have tooth pain or other mouth issues.

K2, I know someone who waited about 11 years between. When all is said and done, the bill will be about 20k. The work is ongoing

I was the opposite. They looked in my mouth (I went to the dental school, so there were several people) and more or less said "WTF?" Apart from the one root canal that needed to be done, my teeth were in perfect condition and barely even needed cleaning. And my wisdom teeth are just fine where they are as well.

K - you are one of the few lucky ones. I remember we talked, some time ago about having a predisposition to naturally good teeth. I have learned in biochemistry classes that those with a fast metabolism have salivary glands that produce copious amounts of saliva which 'washes' the teeth continuously thus leading to tooth health. I have always had a slow metabolic rate which doesn't necessarily mean that I would have bad teeth, but along with other factors, I have poor teeth (but healthy gums).

I predict that,before long, I will have to spend a lot of money on my teeth.

I visited my dentist this morning. He took an xray and everything has healed and is fine.
My implant will take place on 21st April :-X

I'm booked in for an hour and a half :'(

I'll have to find the money myself. The insurance claim isn't through yet :-/

I'm having a Titanium implant. There is a new Zirconium treatment but it's so new that my dentist doesn't use it.

He says that Titanium is 'inert' and I hope he's right.
I'm dreading all the surgery and drilling. The dentist showed me the xray taken today and where he'll be drilling up to .....help!

I am happy to report that having a Tooth Implant is easy compared to having apisectomies and/or root fillings. Of course everything depends on the dentist's skill and my dentist gets full marks

Here's what happened. The dentist took an X-ray of the area to be implanted. I was given a couple of numbing injections in the roof of my mouth; we waited for ten minutes or so for these to take effect then I lay down comfortably listening to soothing comments from the dentist and his helper. They were so kind to me. There followed a fair amount of drilling into my upper jawbone but in reality this only lasted for several minutes. I asked to see the titanium implant before it was put in - it looked like a huge screw

Then it was popped into the hole and seemed to be screwed in by my dentist's strong hand. It has to last for the rest of my life! All this was pain-free. Then he put in a 'healing abutment', took another x-ray, made an appointment for 3 week's ahead so that he can take an impression for a crown...and off I went home feeling like a happy bunny

So, people, do not fear having a tooth implant - just be sure to choose a dentist as skilled as mine

So glad it worked out well, Spindrift. I bet you're glad it's over and done with. Then next stage will be a lot easier.

I don't like going to the dentist either, but I never miss my checkups and cleaning. You only get one set of teeth.

Spindrift, he's going to tell you he was 'only joking'. I'd take into account what Spinny is saying, Mark. Your comments are not always as cute as you may think they are. Infact they can be very yawn producing most of the time, truth be known. Save them for where they will be more appreciated and wanted.

To me it's just like when you say you have a headache and someone says, "It must be painful in a head that size" or "It's probably the wind whistling straight through your ears" or if someone wants a light and says, "Have you got a match?" and you reply, "Yes, my arse and your face", or "My wife never throws anything away" the reply being, "That's probably why you're still around then" or if someone is singing and you ask "Have you ever had singing lessons?" and if they reply yes you say, "I think you better get your money back" or if they reply no then, "You can tell", or "See you later" - "Not if I see you first", or "I've been to the hairdressers" - "When are you going back to get it finished?" or "My back hurts" - "Well try getting off it for a change" or "I slept like a baby last night" - "You're still shitting yourself and waking up crying then?" ....... ad infinitum.

Innocuous and only meant in jest.
But, if my comments are unfortunately taken like that, it is I that have made a misjudgement, it is easy enough for me to refrain and tailor my posts to what is the general norm on the board.

I don't fear teef implants at all - I just can't afford them. Will definitely see to that when I have the cash.

I've always found it bizarre that many medical acts of dubious value are covererd, but nothing concerning teef. I'm glad Spindrift's dental experience went so well. It is a little soon, but when you are properly healed, it will be so great to be able to bite into foods with gusto.

As for making jokes, I am not a mod, but this could be a subject for discussion - as another thread. What is sympathetic camaraderie-based joking for some people is heartless needling for others. The Internet is really a minefield for this stuff.

Today I can smile again ......my implant was finally screwed into my jaw yesterday and I have a wonderful tooth that will never decay! Hurrah! three cheers for dental implants. I thoroughly recommend them.

but you have to find the 'right' dentist, like I did.
