I had to go out tonight, leaving the dog alone in the yard despite his mild separation anxiety and his psychotic desire to ride in the car.
When I returned, I opened the gate and he bombed out onto the sidewalk, overcome with joy at my miraculous reappearance. He was frisking around frantically as I tried to open the trunk, and somehow in the leaping and gamboling, rammed the hell out of my left knee with his head. I was surprised he wasn't knocked out. I certainly saw stars from the pain in my knee, which is swollen and even has a little brush burn from my skirt fabric.
What about you all ~~ anything stupid happen lately?

Are you kidding! I wasn't going to admit to this but seeing you've started the ball rolling Bixa......
3 days ago I was feeding the birds when my sons sausage dog decided to challenge the storks and every other bird landing on the lawn. In my haste to shoo her away I tripped in a new pair of sandals, stumbled forward trying to save myself but all in vain as I landed on my stomach and chest!
To proove my story I showed by DH two white melons with large purple bruises on them

Not recent but definitely freak.
Many years ago I was practising cricket. I was batting and the ball came off the bat and hit me gently in the mouth. the trouble was that I tended to bat with my tongue out and my reaction was to close my mouth but didn't get the tongue in quickly enough. Result - I bit right through my tongue and had to go to hospital and have my tongue stitched back together.

Oh, I thought this thread was going to be about the amazing number of people who slip and fall directly on top of Coke bottles or lightbulbs.

My best friend and I are pretty much the poster children for weird accidents. Her dad jokes "Don't drop a toothpick around them, one of them would probably break her neck". I'll just tell you about one string of incidents:
During instruction on how to change a flat tire, we were told to use a foot to press the tire iron thingy down and thus loosen the bolt. Friend using foot and me bent to provide something for her to put a hand on while directing the tire iron. Teacher said don't do that...I moved, thus removing my directing hand from the tire iron, and which flipped into the air and caused a cut requiring stitches to teacher's leg. Still didn't get the thing loosened, and the one time either of us ever had a flat tire we were together. We drove an extra block to park in front of the DQ where locals gather for coffee. Flustered around until they came out to change it for us.
Two weeks after the teacher's unfortunate cut, we let her dog's young pups in on return from a shopping trip. In process of trying to calm the excited poochies - two Schnauzers - managed to end up with her needing five stitches in an eyelid and me needing three in hand from a doggie hangnail catching skin.
Three months later, my cat had surgery for an infected cut on the leg. She came to visit and accidentally let the cat out. In the process of pulling the cat from under a hedge next door, cat went ballistic (poor baby, I'm sure she was in a lot of pain) and we ended up with some pretty deep scratches in our hands / lower arms. A neighbor saw us reach under hedge and come up bleeding and called 911 screaming about a snake. No clue why she thought it was a snake as we'd not seen one at our house, unless she had been confused by hearing us talk of the cotton mouth that friend's dad had been forced to smoke out of her antique player piano. About the time we finally caught the cat, a police car, fire rescue truck, ambulance, and animal control showed up. All unneeded.
A month later, while attempting to surprise her parents with an anniversary dinner, I turned around from slicing veggies at the sound of a squeal from my girlfriend to see she'd managed to get a grease fire going in a skillet and black smoke was rolling out. I only just managed to stop her from dousing it with a glass of water. While I was fishing out a lid, her sister appeared with the news the firemen she'd called for were turning the corner. By the time they entered, I'd managed to cover the pot thus putting out the flame. They insisted on traipsing through to see what we were up to, and my friend's parents arrived home for the lovely surprise of three fire trucks and two police cars parked at their house.
About six weeks later, my friend's father got round to pouring a concrete walk from front door of house to driveway. He used some small sticks and twine to surround and mark off the drying concrete so no one would walk on it. The following day, knowing the concrete was by then dry, my friend stepped over the twine and walked out to my car when I arrived to pick her up for work. In the process of stepping over to get out, she got her foot caught in the twine. She fell into the side of my car receiving a concussion and causing $1200 of damage with her head. She also got a stick stuck into the meat of her leg.
Wanting to help my friend relax after she left the hospital, we got permission to go to a friend's pond stocked with fish for a bit of fishing. On the first cast, my friend managed to get her lure caught in a bush. One jerk and yup! You got it! She got a large hook from the lure caught in her chin. We had no idea how to get it out. In the process of trying to get her into the car and out to the hospital without making things worse, we taped the lure to her face. When we arrived at the hospital, the doctor who had seen her for the previous head and leg injury was again on duty. Trying to undo my tape job so he could cut the barbed tip off and pull the hook out, he managed to embed another of the hooks in his thumb. Those new lures are sure sharp! Another doc finished, and when he got done told us anyone our age who's tetanus was up to date was clumsy.
What can I say? We're talented.

This was the worst 'freak' accident to which I had the misfortune of being the victim! Last year, 40km from camp on a dirt road in the middle of the bush with a storm coming - Wham! I saw the light come onto my dashboard telling me a tire had lost pressure. You are forbidden to exit the vehicle in the national park, but hoping that nothing large or hairy suddenly appeared my DH got out and had a look. Not to worry he said - we are on run-flat tires.
We only just made it back and this is why..........

Limping into camp we were overwhelmed by the concern and help received from the other campers.
It was amazing to see how they all rallied around us to help change a wheel, which had we attempted on the open road would never have worked. It took three big men and a small sledge hammer to get it off!

Gertie, I'm never coming near you.....
My daftest freak accident was slipping a disc whilst loading the dishwasher. I may at some time in my life have had pain like it but I'm blowed if I can remember.......

my brother was prone to accidents when he was a kid. most memorable one i think was when he was about 10 years old and was tying his shoes, leaning his hand on a door step. my mom, annoyed at something and not realizing his finger was on the metal thing under the door, pulled the door shut. he was crying and bleeding and as she tried to calm him down she washed off the blood - and saw the bone sticking out his little finger. we were on vacation somewhere in rural Sweden so he had to go on a long ride to the hospital, but as my dad's cousin, whom we visited there, had sawed off a finger or something once before, he knew we had to put the finger tip (which was a little round pink thing sticking under the door then) into a bag with ice cubes. But in the hospitals the doctors said the finger tip is too small to put on, so instead they just sew the wound together, so one of his little fingers is shorter than the other now.
well but that was the vacation where also our car burned down on the journey home, so it was a memorable one in general...

That's exactly what happened to my brother, except his finger was near the door hinge instead of at the bottom when a sudden draft slammed the door shut. They couldn't put his fingertip back on either.

My freak accident is very typical of most Canadian children. 
We are told NOT to touch any metal with your bare hands while playing outside at the playground in the winter but....
I was home from school one afternoon and my mom had her girlfriends over for afternoon tea so she dressed me up warm and pushed me out the back door to play.
I loved listening to the ladies talk over tea and was not happy about going outside. Due to being all by myself, I was quickly bored and found myself over by the kitchen window looking in at my mom and her friends. I was not paying attention and I accidently stuck my tounge out and it stuck to the metal windowsill, the ladies shrieked in horror and my mom rushed out with a glass of water and poured it over my tounge to pry it off.
I did not do it on purpose, but I then got to sit in the livingroom and listen to my mom and friends have their tea.

Those are horrible stories about the fingers. Gad, poor little guys!
Mich, you "accidentally" stuck your tongue out? Sorry, I shouldn't laugh. Did they see you with your tongue stuck to the glass, or were you making noises?
I had a freak accident today, but a very minor one. I was at a meat market buying dog bones. When the butcher handed me the bag, I put my hand underneath to receive it, as it was pretty heavy. One of the sharp bones had come through the bag and pricked me hard enough to draw blood.
Hmmm. That's two dog-related accidents in less than 24 hours!

Mom and her friends were sitting right in front of the kitchen window at the table and watched as I did it, thinking, no she is not actually going to do that... oh no! she did it! I was only about 5, but I certainly remember every second of it. One of those traumatic imprints.

i did lick some metal fence on purpose in winter when i was quite small, because it was glistening so nicely, looked like it might taste nice. i don't think anyone really warned me about it ever before. was kind of shocked that i couldn't remove my tongue and kept pulling till it came off and was bleeding a bit. was rather embarrassed...

I had a freak accident yesterday....
As part of my job I have to sort through the blood fridges (not as gruesome as it sounds...I work in a blood transfulion laboratory in a city hospital) The fridges have inner perspex doors that protect the blood units on the shelves of the fridge whilst the main door is open...you just open the perspex door on the shelf that you are looking at.....
Whilst I was rummaging around on the bottom shelf, the perspex door to the top shelf swung open without me knowing about it....I was busy dealing with an emergency...I stood up and gouged my head on the open door OW...ow ow ow OW.....
I couldn't stop what I was doing so carried on....but it really, really hurt. There was only one other person in the lab and he gave me a cool pack to hold on it..I didn't break the skin or owt...it continued to hurt, and I told the rest of the staff about what I'd done when they all came in at 0900 but nobody was particularly interested...
Then I started to feel sick and dizzy.....
Another member of staff came on duty at lunchtime (I bumped my head at 0815) and she marched me down to A&E to be checked over. I thought I was OK but when asked I couldn't remember who my GP was, or my phone number, then I barfed  ...apparently I have mild concussion oops...

Oh my goodness Cheery, I hope your recovery goes well. Concussions are a serious issue and you need to have some one monitor you for a few days, especially if a headache persists. It is amazing how we will continue in an emergency situation even though something like this happens, adrenaline I suppose.

Thanks dearie...I'm still feeling a bit strange...and almost set the house on fire this morning when I left some crumpets toasting under the grill and wandered off to have a shower...  At least Monday is a Bank Holiday so I don't have to think about work until Tuesday....

Back at work and fine thank you Bixa dear...I was horrified and rather embarrassed to see that my little accident has triggered all sorts of investigations, BIG notices on the fridge doors and a RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) incident report (the first my department has had to do) 
The incident triggered an avalanche of emails from various important sounding people in the organisation.. my boss and the health and safety officer have forwarded all these to me so that I can see what's happening. Turns out that dozens of my colleagues have reported hurting themselves on the same doors... I do wonder how much this is all costing tho....

Since I know someone who lost his health and ability to work at a job he loved due to an injury from a repeatedly reported danger area, I wouldn't care how much it's costing.
It could have been that you wouldn't be telling us about this now because you'd lost the ability to do so.
Sorry -- I'll get off the soapbox. You can see I feel strongly about this.
