Weather satellites and such have probably doomed weathervanes to oblivion before the end of this century. When was the last time you looked at a weathervane? And I doubt than very many of us have ever looked at one to determine the direction of the wind. I had totally stopped noticing them, particularly in the city, but recently I noticed that they are still with us for the time being. Unfortunately, it is damned difficult (at least in a big city) to get a good picture of one. I had to use the maximum zoom on all of these pictures and then crop the hell out of them for the weathervane to be apparent. I'm sure that some of you can do better than this, especially in the more rural areas...

Not as nice as yours, but this is the first weather vane I think I've ever seen in Oaxaca ~~

This is the weathervane ontop of my DH's model train building. After a a very unusual ice storm we had a few years back.

So many good pictures here! I particularly love how dahuffy's photo made me do a double-take & its interesting b&w feel.
But I mostly wanted to comment on something I noted the first time I saw this thread & am admiring again: Kerouac, that's an extremely effective presentation in the OP -- inspiring!

#15 is beautiful. Also, look at it as you scroll the page up and down. It appears to move.

a) I would kill for that weathervane!
b) What a great shot ~~ the blue, blue sky, the gleaming gilding, and the perfectly placed jet. Ya done good!

To me it looks like Tinkerbell is pointing her wand in the direction she wants that high-flying jet plane to go!

It amazes me how you spot all these curious weather vanes Kerouac! I particularly like the one you took from the top of the Printemps building (Aug 2010) in all it's glittering gold. Does anyone recognize the very top emblem? I think it is similar - OR IS - the sign for a medical facility or doctor??

A fish weathervane would make me immensely happy. Nice one, Kimby.
Love the delicacy of your latest set, Kerouac.

I think it is similar - OR IS - the sign for a medical facility or doctor?? That's what it looks like to me, too, but I don't know why it is there!

Tod, where do you get the 'OR IS' from? I know what you are looking at but do you mean OR IS is what it looks like? It is a stylised version of the Rod of Asclepius, a symbol used usually that I've seen on Pharmacies but is associated with the medical profession certainly. Also why it is there I've no idea, maybe just decoration?

Sorry Mark, maybe I put that badly. I meant I thought it looked similar to the medical symbol, (or maybe actually was the medical symbol), meaning that I was uncertain at what I was looking at - but hey! it was sideways on Thanks for the correct name!
