This is from a tree we just cut down for next year's firewood. It was killed by bark beetles which introduce a fungus called "blue stain" that clogs the pores of the tree and cuts off its water supply. We lost 5 trees to the beetles/fungus in the past year, so our woodpile is growing. :(

I thought I explained it above, K2. Unless you mean the dark and light growth rings, you would be asking about the blue stain fungus that is introduced by bark beetles, and spreads through the tree's plumbing, so to speak, clogging it up and killing it.
