When China arrives with all of its money in the poorest parts of Africa, there is no stopping it.

One of the main problems with the Chinese arriving in Africa, Latin America or elsewhere is that they bring in Chinese workers. This is what happened in Zambia and has caused a lot of resentment among the locals.
Not in Africa, but in yesterday's paper there was a picture of Indian workers suffering from the cold in Afghanistan. I mean, surely one of the reasons given for Western countries being in Afghanistan is that of building up the economy and civil society, giving jobs so that young men are not tempted to join various militias. So why bring in Indians?
This said, this article about Lamu is really a shame. It was such a pleasant place -- the only area of Kenya where nobody begged and children ran up to say "Jambo!"

China is doing the same thing in Nepal and threatens to build a flyover railway across the Himalayas and down to the plains. I can't imagine it. It's all to do with corrupt politicians in the countries involved.

Thanks for that. I enjoyed watching the video clip and remembering the island. When I stayed there I spent 2 weeks in a friend's Arab house overlooking the beach at Shela. Shela is about 20 minutes walk to the main part of town. (How I loved sailing in the dhows). One day I'll find the pictures I took in 1978 when there were no digital cameras. I'll scan and post them.
If you find any more news on Lamu please post it.
