Space invaders in Paris!

A lot of you have been to Paris, and I'm sure that some of you have seen the space invaders. And I'm sure that some of you have no idea what I am talking about.

Since the 1990's, a French artist using the pseudonym 'Invaders' has been placing small mosaics on buldings in Paris. What could possibly be better than a mosaic tile to represent the visible pixels of early video games?

But these things are not just in Paris -- you can see them in most of the world now, if you know where to look.

Among the cities that have been invaded are Berlin, London, Geneva, Hong Kong, Istanbul, New York, Varanasi, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, Perth, Tokyo and Bangkok.

Over the past couple of days, I went looking for space invaders in Paris, and besides the two above, I also found these...

Those are adorable! I'm particularly happy to see them as I'm presently reading a long article about Andy Warhol and Pop Art, and looking at Invader's work is expanding the whole topic for me. Thanks!

The second photo is the only one I know of on the Champs Elysées. It is on the outer railing of the entrance to the George V metro station. I am thinking that some of the tiles were peeled off by tourists getting souvenirs.

My goodness Kerouac you will know every lane and alley in Paris soon. You are turning up strange symbols everywhere, including that Mouse. These symbols must have meanings.

Would they show that a particular gang controls a particular area?

I went on a walking tour in Paris a while back and the tour guide was a Brit with that sense of British humour (notice my British spelling) that I love so much. He referred to the "invader" as having "colonized" certain buildings. Kerouac, I am from Boston and remember well the incident you mentioned. It was a huge over-reaction by the police and media. The invader in this case happened to be based on a cartoon character on a popular tv show.
