That was Irina, Kerouac. Just this past week. I didn't really take much notice of the reports in January, but after serveying the damage first hand in Kruger, I went back and watched the video clips of vehicles taking chances to go across fast flowing and very scary rivers!

When people say that the concept of "Europe" does not exist, I always think of days like today when the Belgian bus tragedy in Switzerland brings the continent together. It is practically the only subject on tonight's evening news in France.

Then again, perhaps it is because of the horrific accident in France in 1982, when a bus of children was involved in an accident, killing 53 people including 44 children -- most of whom burned to death.

Today's accident killed "only" 28 people so far (some are expected to die in hospital), of which 22 were children. Nevertheless, it is the worst accident in Switzerland in history. (The French accident is also the worst French accident in history.)

When I watched the news programs this morning I was so sad. Sad for the children who died, for those who were injured for those that are fighting for their lives in hospital and for the parents who were gathered at the school in Belgium waiting to hear where their child was. An incredibly horrific accident. :(

I remember traveling through a tunnel on our way to Lugano, 22 klms. long I think? I remember how my husband talked about the fire in the tunnel years before and that he would ensure he stayed as far back as instructed by the signs, he knew I was anxious.

Hopefully the remaining children will survive this and be able to return home to their families as soon as possible.
