I saw that one of my neighbours scavenged an easel and backboard from the trash downstairs. He put it in front of his door, so he probably did the same thing I did -- rummaged through the trash and carried some of it back upstairs when going to work in the morning.

One reason that I did not go trash diving for art supplies is that my place is already overflowing with artwork -- mostly not my own, but I am a warehouse for a friend who will be away for several years.

So I already have an easel.

I am a big fan of Vietnamese lacquer art, using egg shells and mother of pearl. But I still have no idea of what the name of the original artwork is, as it is obviously not Vietnamese.

I've just leaned all of the other stuff up against the eaves.

You would probably be amazed at the value of some of these paintings. The one on the easel is probably the most expensive one -- it was used by France Telecom as the illustration for a phone card, so it is really quite famous. And nobody knows where the original is hiding except my friend and me.

An amazing room of lovely art-candy ;D . Kerouac, do you leave them exposed all the time or throw an old bed sheet over them for protection against light and dust? (because they're not behind glass yet).
I was just thinking of the lengths museums go to - like no flash photography etc.

And I never got around to doing a before or after because when it got down to the wire so to speak and my house guest was due any hour, all the crap got shoved, dispersed to various locations.
I was however able to give my friend some nice clothes to take away with her to wear to work at the university. Stuff that I rarely if ever wear anymore but was not quite willing to donate or toss. :-/

No,never enough Kimby. I tried to pawn off some of the approximately a dozen or more blazers that I have both mine and my mother's. As she lives in Miami Beach she has rare occasion to wear such a garment. So, I was foiled.

I had a dream last night about my mother's collection of cut glassware, much of which I packed away in a shed up there. Don't ask me what that was all about. ???
God,she had some stuff!!

Well, I seem to be a hoarder. When I sold my house of 27 years, I emptied out the back basement, which was like a huge kitchen drawer, and many things from my home.. Sold very little (since I was moving so fast!), put things out on the sidewalk (which disappeared by morning) and actually paid people to take away what I thought were good pieces. Mistakes happen. In the careless, self created 'rush of the moment', I somehow put some of my valued pieces of art on the sidewalk….the painting I loved most by my mother, and , a work of art by my tenant and valued friend . Gone, in the night. I miss them so much.

Hoarding is an interesting concept. Now, in the condo, I have a ‘lock-up’ (about 10ft. by 10ft.) Within the first month, I carefully placed the extra valuables that I 'could not part with'. A year later, I have absolutely no idea what is in there, except for one box of books (no idea which ones) and my suitcase. (which I used to travel to Paris last October). I’m going to the lockup tonight to look.

I made a number of mistakes emptying my parents' house as well. Not in terms of what I thought should be kept, but when I told my brother of certain items that I had taken to the Goodwill Industries store, he was highly disappointed. I also discovered my mistake by visiting the store once or twice over the week I was still there and seeing some of the items already on sale at prices that I never would have imagined.

Our mistakes are different. It seems that you got rid of stuff and it was then sold for good prices. My things had nothing to do with money. I put them out on the sidewalk and they were snapped up. But, for me, they can never be replaced, the money is unimportant. My mother’s painting was beautiful and exceptional.

She only began to paint when she was 65 years old.
Her first painting I still have (geraniums in my kitchen), and many others. The one I carelessly lost was special.

Oh, I'm so sorry, Jazz. Perhaps you could put an ad up on craigslist or in a community paper. Of course you'd have to buy it back, but the takers might be generous too.

That is a good idea Lagatta.
I too, will on occasion have some regrets about some things I tossed and sometimes obsess about it. It passes.
Nothing perhaps quite so sentimental as your painting Jazz.
Perhaps you might find some consolation in knowing that the person who owns the painting is enjoying it immensely and it is gracing their wall and providing consolation and or inspiration.
I have a good bit of original art work that is stashed away, not where the artist I am sure would want for it to necessarily be. I often feel guilty about that and say I don't deserve to even have this.

Thanks all. Lagatta, that ‘s a good idea! I’ll try it out, but somehow, I feel whoever has it probably isn’t looking at Craig’s list ads. It may be best to think as Casimira suggests, that they are at least enjoying it. For me, it was her finest painting, technically and aesthetically. It was wonderful to see what she created with such a late start, far superior to my erratic efforts. Her teacher was a senior as well (10 years older than my mother!) and enjoyed a good reputation in Toronto with her work. One day, the painting class came to my garden and I still have Lee’s gorgeous watercolour of the morning glories. However, I have my mother’s complete ‘portfolio’….about 30 watercolours, so that is good.

Just to add, for those who think that it may be’ too late’. My mother’s progression was quite remarkable in only 5 years, beginning at 65. She loved painting. She was able to portray water beautifully, which I have always found difficult.

With the recent announcement that our local daily newspaper is cutting back on daily publication,I now have a reason to justify my hoarding of the weekly hometown newspaper from NY that my mother got me a lifetime subscription to. I don't always have time to read it but, only in the most ruthless of moments during a purge can I bring myself to toss them. Out of sheer guilt.
How hopeless is that? :-/

I finally asked my Mom to unsubscribe me from the weekly newspaper years ago, as all my friends from high school were too old to be getting married and too young to be in the obituaries!

I, also, had trouble throwing it away. Now that I don't get it, I don't miss it. If I can keep it from coming into the house, it's way easier than trying to get it out of the house once I've allowed it in.

I've also unsubscribed to all my magazines, though Mr. Kimby still gets several that I will look at.

This particular weekly is really top notch in a variety of ways. It's also quite a large newspaper, at least 3 sections to it. Aside from the usual betrothals, obituaries, local politics and the like, it has a fabulous arts section, nature notes, gardening, cooking (Craig Claiborne used to write for them when he was alive) and excellent photography, book reviews, and sometimes short fiction pieces.
I really thought that the subscription was going to run out the year after my mother passed away but upon phoning them up for a missed issue ( :-X), found out that it's never gonna stop as long as the presses are still rolling. :-/

Anyway, on topic here, people all around me have already started stocking up, and, now hoarding bottled water, canned goods, pet foods and supplies, batteries, candles etc....all items they might need in the event of another Katrina like scenario. I think, although, don't know for sure, they are predicting a very active tropical storm/hurricane season for this year. It's still way too fresh in peoples minds what went down almost 7 years ago now.
