The little "schnick!" that my computer makes when a new email comes in. Notification of a new post on an Any Port bookmarked thread! (I usually have the speakers turned off and don't hear it.)

Can you set the Main Page on a bookmark?

I think people who don't check the Main Page frequently miss some stuff.

A fly in its death throes after being sprayed...............

He'll never rub his nasty little forefeet together again!

How big is the thing, that you can hear it?!

Damn -- it's like WWIII on this otherwise silent Sunday! MONSTER fireworks going off outside my house.

Wait -- I hear religious singing, so it must be a procession although I don't know what it would be celebrating.

the football game mr. r. is listening to next door (though now it seems to be over, sounds more like commercials)

The cluck cluck of a chook [hen] next door after it has laid an egg....................
Posted by rikita on Jan 22, 2012, 2:50pm
just some distant car noises and my computer (which is quite noisy)
Posted by foreverman on Jan 31, 2012, 11:47am
The wind blowing a gale outside and the window rattling which I cannot find, its starting to annoy me
Posted by onlymark on Jan 31, 2012, 12:01pm
If you can't find it, it's probably your brain working loose in your head.
Posted by tod2 on Jan 31, 2012, 2:43pm
That's what I keep telling my better half Mark!- He maintains we have a repetitive knock in the back of our car especially when travelling on rougher surfaces.......I know it's there, but somehow I have managed to 'tuned out' of it 8-)

The sound around me right now is the whirring of air rushing through my aircon at high speed - Whew! It's hot out there today!
Posted by rikita on Feb 10, 2012, 9:07pm
no sounds other than my computer.
Posted by kimby on Feb 20, 2012, 5:35pm
The endless ringing in my ears, actually more of a high pitched buzz, like high voltage lines overhead.

I tried to dispatch it by streaming a classical music radio station online, but that slows down loading of Any Port's photo-rich threads, so had to give in and endure the internal infernal noise.
Posted by bixaorellana on Feb 20, 2012, 11:55pm
Wow, Kimby -- you've reported on that before, quite a while back. Have you been checked out for possible causes?

Mark had a "diagnosis" I believe. Something to do with "as your head empties out as you age, it fills with noise".

I tried discontinuing the baby aspirin I take each day for heart health, but after 2 weeks, no difference. It's a background noise, similar to but quieter than, the ringing you hear in the absence of any sound. Except if I think about it, it's there all the time.

Great article on wiki, bixa. It's probably age-related (like my vision problems). I have been very careful about noise as my Dad has had major hearing loss from shooting as long as I can remember. I've worn earplugs when mowing the lawn, for example, don't wear earbuds to listen to music, and avoid loud concerts.

I do drink a couple cups of coffee each morning, so that could be a culprit. And quinine, the other ingredient in a Gin and Tonic, my summer favorite, is also linked. But this happens all winter, when I've switched to bourbon and water...

Tinitus is a major thing, a bit like a constant toothache, like when you've been to a loud nightclub and then go outside for the next few hours. I regularly had the same sort of thing when I used to work in them but fortunately it was never a constant ringing for days on end. I found that if I submerged my head in a warm bath it gradually faded away.
(But that was probably the sawdust in my head getting waterlogged).
You also find people tend to have it on windy days when the air whistles straight through from one ear to the other.

My husband has tinitus in one ear -- a permanent whistling sound. He says you get used to it, which is good since there is no cure as far as I know.

Good excuse for not hearing what I say. ;D

Ah! So this permanent sound of cicada's chirping is all in my head?? And here I thought it was just another hot summer's day in Africa ;D
Posted by kimby on Feb 22, 2012, 3:32pm
Cicada is a good sound comparison for my head-noise. Though it's nowhere near as loud as the cicadas I hear on summer trips to Wisconsin. That would drive me insane if I had to listen to it endlessly.

Kimby - Yes THAT too! It is another description of the buzzing, now that you've mentioned it!

I've pricked up my ears since reading that web link and seeing that one of the side effects of aspirin is the constant "cicadas'!
Well, I have been on Ecotrin for almost 2 years now and am trying to think back in time, if the noise started when I started the tablets???!! Could well be, so I am discontinuing them for the week we will be away from home starting Sunday (more Kruger Park...) Then I can make an assessment ;)
Don't think my blood will thicken to a dangerous level in that short time....but my goodness it would be wonderful to live in absolute silence!
Posted by kimby on Feb 22, 2012, 5:38pm
Would be especially nice to only hear nature sounds while in Kruger!
Posted by casimira on Feb 22, 2012, 6:07pm
Kimby are you still having problems with tinnitus?

Nice and quiet here today. A few birds chirping.
Posted by kimby on Feb 22, 2012, 6:43pm
casi, it's a chronic low-level noise. Always with me, for the past couple years. I don't know if it technically meets the standards for "tinnitus" though.

I detect a certain fondness for it Kimby..."Always with me".... ;)

The weather here is warm enough to have all the windows open, however,"the grasscutters from hell" have arrived and are about to drive me out of my own house!
Mowers, edgers and blowers all at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:(
I'm outta here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by kimby on Feb 23, 2012, 10:25pm
fondness no - grudging acceptance is more like it, cuz I don't have a choice.

casi you'll be happy to know that Mr. Kimby is shopping for a gas blower, since our electric one isn't loud enough ;)

Mercifully quiet here, except for the nice gentle sound of my little wind chime.

I woke up this morning to the sound of horrible Mexican oompah music. My neighbor is working on his roof & had the world's ugliest, whiniest disc playing up there where it would waft into my house.

the tv show mr. r. is watching next room.
