A commentary on the US food industry

Wow, Gertie ~~ I am so embarrassed that I'm only now looking at this very interesting and provocative thread. Thanks for posting this.

I think I skipped it because the title says it's about the food industry in the United States. Not only do I not live in the US, but I figured "Well, everyone already knows bad stuff about the US food industry."

Now, having seen the trailer and the interview, I think it's something everyone needs to watch. The issues addressed in the trailer apply to probably every developed country, not just the US. The interviewer is excellent (although the lighting in CBS's studio is not!) and the filmmakers give thoughtful and illuminating replies.

Since I live where there are many fresh markets, I can eat quite cheaply and well simply by staying away from supermarkets. I even have access to meat markets which know the provenance of their meats. Further, I only have to please myself. But what about people who live in climates where locally-grown, or at least grown-in-the-same-country produce is not regularly and easily available? Or those who must feed a spouse who expects the same kind of food "everyone" eats? Parents can control the diet of little kids, but once they're off to school they learn about sugary cereals, pop, etc.

One of the most sobering points comes at the end of the interview, when the correlation between food consumption and poor health is mentioned.
