Haha... we have another red carpet tonight because it is the night of the French Academy Awards. I am just starting to watch it now.
Sean Penn will be handing out the award for best film, and Dustin Hoffmann will be receiving a lifetime achievement award from Emma Thompson, in terms of "presence of stars from other places." I'm thinking that it is not impossible the Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston are around, because they are on the European tour for plugging Marley and Me which is about to open across Europe.

Perhaps it is due to the economic context, but I did not see any ultra extravagant dresses at the French awards ceremony last night. Here are just two somewhat flashier examples -- Kate Winslet and Bérénice Béjo.

Kate Winslet always looks as though she is wearing her own clothes, rather than some glad rags she borrowed for the occasion. Also, the colors she chooses work with her coloring. She never looks washed out, unlike the creepily waxy Angelina Jolie & some others.
I know I'm old fashioned, but I think chignons or at least some kind of pulled back hairdo looks better with a formal gown. It also shows off dramatic jewelry better. Actually, that black dress above would have benefited from a nice hunky diamond necklace.

Well, if you want to put a chunky diamond necklace with that black dress, you have to get rid of the chunky diamond belt.
And I find this black and gray thing she is wearing absolutely awful. It makes me think of a busy cook in a restaurant kitchen with a rag to wipe her hands tucked into the belt.

I don't agree about the black dress, Bjd. I think a necklace & higher hair was needed to balance the visual impact of the belt. That said, I think no belt & a sleeker, slightly dropped waist would have made that a truly beautiful dress. I love the skirt.
I totally agree with you about last year's black & gray number & love your description. However she manages to wear even that well.

Kate Winslet always looks amazing. My favorite is the electric blue number, paired with a carefree, wavy hairdo.
I do think the dress she wore when she won her Oscar was rather drab. And although the sculptural hair was elegant, it did make her look a little older.
#1 Angelina Jolie, looking as usual like a slightly crazed slut.
#3 Stacy Kiebler -- how many lamés had to die so she could have that dress?
#4 Viola Davis -- She looks great, the color of the dress works beautifully, especially with Davis's outrageously wonderful red hair. The style manages to be both elegant & fun. But my problem with these star dresses shows up here as well. What's with the breastical section? Make the bodice a little higher or something so these women don't all have to do the Bunny hunch to stay inside their dresses.
#5 Michelle Williams -- where to start? I admit she did wonders with that chenille bedspread & maybe some help from the bibbety-bobbety-boo godmothers. She is so overwhelmed by that dress she seems to be standing behind one of those joke cut-outs at the beach to have her picture made.
#6 Sandra Bullock looks supremely elegant, queenly even. The top could be a little more fitted, though, and she needs earrings.
#7 Cameron Diaz looks really good in that unforgiving dress -- quite nice, really. If she'd pulled her hair back, she could have achieved real elegance.
#8 Rooney Mara -- no, just no. The dress has intimation of great 30s glamour, but that bizarre bodice & Mara's terrible posture just defeat it.
#9 Emma Stone -- Christ, she looks like a puppy wrapped under the Christmas tree.
#10 Gwyneth Paltrow -- She looks stunning. The dress skirts the edge of 30s sci-fi queendom, but somehow just works perfectly on her.
#11 Jessica Chastain -- I adore the dress, absolutely adore it. Unfortunately it is wearing her, not vice versa. She could be very beautiful and dramatic, but not in that color combination.
#12 Jennifer Lopez -- No class, no class at all. She looks like some kind of figurine on top of an ice cream franchise.
#14 Penélope Cruz -- She looks perfect, totally perfect. This is the absolute best so far. The dress is so beautifully fitted & her look understated, yet just right. She & the odd color of the dress just glow.
#15 Octavia Spencer -- Her hair is nice and the dress almost works. A lower neckline & less sleeve would have made her look dazzling.
#16 Natalie Portman -- I can't put my finger on what exactly is missing from that picture. The dress is fun, but I think it would have been improved with spaghetti straps or even a halter neck. The necklace is all wrong. A jet choker would have been great or maybe some red crystals -- anyway, something kickier.
#17 Kristen Wiig -- She's coming to my house to dust when the Oscars are over.
#18 Meryl Streep -- Love the color, hate the bathrobe dress.
#19 Glenn Close -- Hooray for Hollywood! Fabulous look.
#21 Melissa McCarthy -- In the immortal words of my baby sister: "She couldn't look worse if she tried."
#22 Shailene Woodley -- I dunno ....... she looks as though she's getting ready to accept an Olympic medal or something.
#23 Bérénice Bejo -- Sheesh, someone needs to take that girl shopping! Judging from this hideous number & the one higher up in the thread, she has no taste whatsoever.
#25 Ellie Kemper -- Absolutely perfect look, a real winner!
#26 Rose Byrne is taking a night off from her dominatrix gig to attend the Oscars.
#27 Maya Rudolph -- an assault on the eyeballs. Yuck!
#28 Wendi McLendon-Covey -- she looks just-right in that!
#29 Annie Mumolo is wearing off-the-rack ugly.
#31 Judy Greer -- applause! slinky high glamour & wit, what more can you wish for on Oscar night?
#32 Missi Pyle -- Whoever is responsible for that color should be lined up next to whoever designed that monstrosity & shot. Shoot Missi, too, just because her name is stupid & she thinks she looks nice in that thing.
#33 Melissa Leo -- boringly demure
#34 Penelope Ann Miller -- great 40s bombshell look!
#35 Tina Fey is wearing the big yawn
#36 Kate Mara -- Little-girl dress with a Jayne Mansfield bodice. What's with the stupid thing hanging off of it? Stupid dress, stupid pose.
#37 Virginia Madsen -- the dress could be wonderful on someone, but not her.
#38 Anna Faris is The Insect Queen
#39 Milla Jovovich -- perfect hair, perfect make-up, and the dress would have been perfect if it didn't have that jarring shoulder pad stuck in it.
#40 Bingbing Li -- beautiful gown. She's lovely, but doesn't quite look old enough for that dress yet.
#41 Sarah Hyland -- another lovely girl who's stuck in a matronly colored, fussily frumpy dress.
#42 Busy Philipps -- having fun with her look. Nice dress, great shoes with it.
#43 Jane Seymour -- no, no, no. With that hair, she might be chomping gum behind the popcorn machine in the Woolworth's. The dress looks too big for her, making her look stringy. Even the shoes seem as though she couldn't be bothered to go find some that worked better with the dress.
#44 Kelly Ripa is so pretty. I can't say anything nasty about the dress except that it's a style I don't care for at all.
#45 Sherri Shepherd -- that dress is a beautiful color. The top of it is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen.
#46 Louise Roe -- I'm not sure what's wrong here. I think that dress needs a statelier woman to wear it, one who wouldn't need the shoulder pads.
#47 Kelly Osbourne -- when I forced myself to look again, I realized the dress kinda works on her. It's just that she ruined the whole look with that hair & the red lipstick.
#48 Giuliana Rancic -- a great look on her!

Since I didn't know who most of these people are, I read Bixa's comments first, and I guess that coloured my judgement a bit -- but not much. The only one I thought looked really good is Gwyneth Paltrow. She has class and the dress suits her perfectly.
Why this craze for strapless -- it doesn't suit everyone, they need some kind of whalebone (or whatever is used nowadays) to keep the top up. There is too much dress at the bottom with respect to the top. That's why I thought Kelly Ripa looks good too.
On the contrary, Kerouac, Mery Streep could go shopping -- she looks like a bag lady.
I don't know if it's just a bad period for fashion, but most of this stuff is really awful -- bad colours, badly worn. Even Jennifer Lopez might lose her title of "celebrity with the worst taste in clothes" that I gave her a few years ago.
And why oh why do black women strip the colour out of their hair? That Viola Davis would have looked a million times better without that weird red hair.
Am going through this flipping back and forth with Bixa's comments -- Maya Rudolph -- this has to be the most unflattering dress for her body and the colour doesn't suit her either.
Gomer must have told Missi that dress was nice. What's with the one strap falling off?

Just adding that if you look at the photos of Oscar night from a few decades ago, the women were in day clothes and the men just had normal suits. They certainly looked better than this over the top fashion parade. I wonder when it changed.

Yep -- another point about strapless dresses not fitting correctly. Strapless has been around forever, along with women who shouldn't wear it, but do. But these dolls aren't buying their clothes off the rack to take home & wear to the prom. Is the compulsion to show off their breasts so great that they won't demand clothes that fit?

Awwww, LaGatta ~~ I looked up Uggie. My sister & brother-in-law have an elderly Jack Russell. Roscoe hadn't seen me in a couple of years when I went back to the States this summer. Mich, there are some differences between what you & I liked!
I agree with you about Gwyneth Patrow's look. One reason it worked so well was her perfect carriage.
Some critics have dumped on Penelope Cruz's look, but they were usually the ones that liked Jennifer Lopez's. Nuff said. Penelope Cruz had the sense to know that rock-solid elegance would be so much more glamorous than any of those trying-too-hard numbers.
Your remark prompted me to find a picture of the back of S.Bullock's dress. I still say that the outfit needed some nips & tucks on her. And she was wearing a ponytail!

Miley Cyrus decided to honor a well-known singer of the past by wearing one of her dresses. How do you think Sophie Tucker would feel about that?
Kate Hudson looks nice in that red dress, although again, the top seems to need to be hoisted up. Her hair is blah.
Katie Holmes is a big yawn in that overwhelming color & a simpy dress.
January Jones -- go back inside & change out of that silly bad retro thing & put on something decent.
Zoe Saldana looks as though she's in a doll stand.
I hate to say it, but I like that Victoria Beckham dress even though I think she is as ugly as a booger. Her hair looks like crap, & those nails!
I guess Salma Hayek got tired of being noticed for her beauty & did all she could to hide it under that frumpish watermelon colored dress.
Selena Gomez's dress is really pretty & she wears it well. However she doesn't seem quite old enough for it. Also, & I'm starting to sound like a broken record, somewhat less cleavage would have made the whole look classier.
I think Sofia Vergara is a kick & she looks fabulous in that dress, although, again, it could use more top at the top.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is stunning in that magnificent red with a touch of Duchess of Windsor wedding dress detailing at the waist. A quibble, though: are those shoulder pads??
Kate Beckinsale -- sorry, couldn't type there for a minute, as I was trying to claw my eyes out.
Amy Adams looks unfinished. As a person with breasts, along with others of you reading this, all I can notice is how hers are mashed and pushed in that poorly constructed dress. The bad bodice is rivaled by the clunky, tacked-together skirt.
Olivia Wilde, despite her efforts to jazz up that unfortunate frock, fades into the woodwork.
Diane Kruger -- so unattractive & wearing a bad attempt to be bold.
Kim Kardashian -- another example of the dress wearing the woman.
Elizabeth Banks killed one of the cartoon birds in Up! to make it into a dress.
Julie Bowen could would probably look nice in a toga-ish style & in that interesting color, but the dress just looks confused.
Vanessa Hudgens looks great.
Lily Collins -- I kept trying to like that dress, but I just can't.
Katy Perry -- that dress almost worked, except it's ruined by the silliness tacked on to the top. What is with that hair shade?! Vomit.
Nina Dobrev -- that looks great on her, although I think it needs interesting earrings.
Gwen Stefani -- another one who got tired of being attractive & did everything she could to reverse that. Her hair looks horrible, too.
Heidi Klum looks expensive, yet trampy.
Claire Danes -- oh look, there was lots of fabric left over from making Salma Hayek's frumpy gown, so Claire could try out her sweet 16 look.
Mena Suvari -- mommy look -- I'm playing dress-up!
Anna Paquin -- maybe it's just that I don't like long sleeves? Or maybe she needs dark hose to make that thing work. I don't know.

Kimby, that's a hilarious photo. I thought Angelina Jolie looked embarrassingly narcissistic.
Bixa, good commentating! You should have Joan Rivers' job.
I think Gwyneth Paltrow had the best look of the night. The cape was a daring choice, and the column dress was potentially unforgiving but she looked statuesque in it. The diamond cuff and sleek ponytail perfectly completed the look.
Has anyone mentioned Natalie Portman yet? I thought she looked beautiful. A polka-dotted dress could have come across as too casual, but she pulled it off. The dazzling, million-carat diamond necklace certainly helped.
Octavia Spencer looked lovely in an exquisite beaded gown that flattered her body type.
Those are really the only ones I absolutely loved. I applaud Viola Davis' bold decision to go with a short, natural hairstyle, but hated the dress. Penelope Cruz looked beautiful but the color came across as drab to me. But sometimes a shade like that will look pretty in person and boring on TV.
There were many, many looks I hated that have been thoroughly discussed already that I won't bring them up again. Overall, a disappointing evening for fashion.

Can I just make a comment on hairstyles. It was mentioned somewhere about having the hair up (by Bixa?) but I'd personally prefer hair left down. If it is up, then can someone tell me what the attraction of having it like J. Lopez? To me it looks all wrong having a doughnut on your head, but I bow to the greater female opinion.
