| | What's for lunch? « Thread Started on Jul 16, 2012, 2:55pm » | |
My Mum came for Sunday lunch which I made almost entirely from leftovers! Salmon salad, shrimp salad, tossed salad, marinated beets and green beans, a cave aged Gruyere and some fresh croissants. Dessert was a bowl of raspberries and some figs, halved, topped with Cabozola and broiled. A well chilled Vinho Verde accompanied.

Imec - you surpassed yourself hon! I love the fact you so cleverly put together a lunch that no-one would suspect was the left -overs of another meal....and so what! It looks gorgeous
I am guessing it was that big salmon - how many of you sat down the first time?!

Finally a lunch thread to which I can contribute since I am no longer allowed to add anything to the 'Lunch for working people' thread.

Thanks t2! The salmon was about 3 and a half pounds - the first go-around there were technically 3 of us but my son only had a bite - and decided he still doesn't like it. There were 4 of us on the second round but one of them was him - hence the peanut butter sandwich on one of the plates. There was still enough for a couple of hefty sandwiches left even after the lunch.
Here's the dessert...

Looks terrific imec. Nice to see food photographic in natural light as well, looks quite professional. What is the last dessert item below the raspberries?
<edit> Figs! Should have read the first post better.

God, it all looks yum!!! You're a good son!! Pity Lil' Imec isn't onto salmon yet...hopefully he'll acquire a taste as he matures. You were a picky eater as a youngster no? Yes, and beautifully photographed!

Nice work, IMEC. Send me directions to your house. Thanks.
Today I had a meatball and smoked gouda sub/torta/po'boy, and a side of steamed chard. Sra. Cuevas had some spaghetti with Oaxaca cheese, ham bits and basil, as well as chard.

Albacore tuna salad made with chopped toasted almonds and sweetened dried cranberries; capers. Dressed with mayo and a touch of crema. Oil cured olives on the side. Served on romaine lettuce leaves and a few wedges of tomato.
Some Sauvignon Blanc to drink.
A small bar of Trader Joe's Dark Chocolate for dessert.

We had had a frustrating morning, trying to renew our Michoacán drivers' licenses, but without success.
We soothed ourselves with lunch at Mariscos La Güera, our favorite restaurant in Pátzcuaro. Doña Cuevas had a succulent filete de pescado, touched with garlic, seared on la plancha, accompanied by rice and salad; I had the Ensalada de Mariscos, which has various cooked and ceviche like seafood. I saw shrimp, octopus, and callos de hacha. The latter are like tiny scallops, but not as sweet. Nevertheless, it was excellent. I drank a fine michelada and Sra. Cuevas had an agua mineral.

I had a lunch of hummus and a demi baguette which would have been light if I had not added all of the extra olive oil.

Oven baked chicken, green beans steamed with garlic, baked macaroni and cheese, a biscuit and iced tea. It tasted pretty good, but was really too rich of a meal for me, especially in this heat.
![[image] [image]](http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8016/7623411540_59e1c35182.jpg)
Interesting how the Mac & cheese, chicken, and biscuit are pretty much the same color.

We just had a rich baked macaroni and cheese, with a refreshing crisp non fat coleslaw. But it was supper, not lunch.

We were in Morelia yesterday, and for an early lunch, I had a bowl of birria de chivo estilo Apatzingan. (Spicy goat stew. Apatzingan is a city in the southern, Tierra Caliente region of Michoacán.)
It was cooked and served at a streetside restaurant, across from Morelia's Costco.
![[image] [image]](http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-85a1uviGg8I/UBJXWBGYuTI/AAAAAAAAxLI/BKOf4pwvBwc/s720/IMG_4892.JPG)
I had a choice of maciza (lean) or surtida (every bit and bobble of the animal in the bowl). I felt bold, and ordered a surtida grande. It was a startling $80 pesos, about twice the usual price for non-goat birria. Maybe that was a "gringo price".
It was a bit challenging to eat, but I rose to the occasion. The only bits I set aside were some small, convoluted tubes of the creature that came together in a cluster of little pouches. I did sample a tiny bit, and it wasn't to my liking.
Here's a picture of my birria.
![[image] [image]](http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Bf-ZrytMwx0/UBJXAO2fBVI/AAAAAAAAxK4/Spe-0kx6XXU/s720/IMG_4888.JPG)
It was cooked in this vessel:
![[image] [image]](http://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-SwrXjywbz90/UBJXKjbdWoI/AAAAAAAAxLA/MrJ68yxatBg/s720/IMG_4890.JPG)
It was an interesting experience, but I think that in the future, I'll stick with more mainstream types of birria.
After, at home, I only had to take one Maalox tablet.

Today, July 28, 2012: black beans with shell pasta in a savory broth, topped with cubes of queso Oaxaca. Steamed red and geen chard alongside. Vino tinto "Las Moras" Merlot. Australian liquorice twizzles for dessert.
Big nap.

I went to pick up my bike from a repair/maintenance shop near the ultra-trendy Broadway Market, and stopped for lunch at an Italian restaurant* - penne alla puttanesca, as it happens.
*So trendy that the TV actor Joseph Mawle (Birdsong, Game of Thrones) came in for his lunch too.

Next, a modified Chef's Salad, with romaine, tomato, cucumber and strips of roast turkey. I had two eggs for breakfast, so I won't put them on the Chef's Salad. Or maybe it will be a modified Caesar Salad. I don't know yet.

I had a wonderful meal today at the Lost Dog Café in Arlington, Va. Lunch was a very hot and deliciously soft pita topped with char grilled chicken, sautéed onions and green peppers, mozzarella and garlic mayo. It was a great hot sandwich, but so large I just couldn't eat it all. The chicken was especially tender, seasoned, and nicely cooked.

The Lost Dog Café is decorated with, what else, pictures of dogs! There is fun dog art everywhere you look in this popular little restaurant
even on the bathroom doors.

The owners have also incorporated a mission to save the lives of stray pets into their business.
An excerpt from their website:
The Lost Dog Café has been serving up great pizza, hot sandwiches and beer from around the world in Arlington’s Westover neighborhood since 1985. Well known as a place to get great food at a great price, the café also serves up a hefty slice of compassion with each pizza. Café owners Ross Underwood and Pam McAlwee have been rescuing stray dogs and cats almost as long as they have been in business and the effort continues. Since 2001, Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation has saved the lives of over 18,000 dogs and cats, helping them connect with loving families and forever homes.

I enjoyed my lunch and plan to return many times, but must try their sister café first.
It's called The Stray Cat!

Misc leftovers; incl corn on the cob, grilled rabbit from yetserday's restaurant meal, corn tortillas, kosher style dill pickle and a freshly boiled potato half.
