Here are the soft shell crabs that were sold out in a flash at this past Tuesday's Farmer's Market.

Summer in Montana and local vegetables are coming on strong at the farmers markets.

I should have photographed the morel mushrooms and local strawberries, but didn't.

Next week, the wild huckleberries are expected to be available.

At the Farmer's Market yesterday:

Gorgeous Asian Pears grown in St. Francisville, LA. Not as big as the ones at the Asian Market, but, being locally grown,I could not pass them up,and frankly, prefer them a tad smaller.

Gorgeous stuff there, Kimby. Love the small beets with the tops still on. Beets are always sold too large here, & with wilted or cut-off tops. :(
Is that kohlrabi to the left of the beets?

Wow- pretty Asian pears. I've only seen the paler ones. That blushing gold is really beautiful. Do you like them smaller because they're more flavorful?
Posted by casimira on Aug 11, 2011, 8:25pm
I just prefer smaller fruit. I don't think there's a real discernible taste difference best I can tell thus far. This was my first time purchase of the local pears. I was very tickled that they grew anywhere near here. We don't really see to many local pear varieties, the hard cooking pears are the only ones I know of.

We are in New Jersey now, and today I made a fresh peach pie, with an all butter crust and a brown sugar butter crumb topping.

We just ate some with French Vanilla ice cream on top.

Supper was just some odds and ends, but they were good ones. Lettuce tomatoes, steak sandwich on kaiser roll, marinated roasted peppers, bow tie pasta salad with sun dried tomatoes.

The pie, of course, was the cat's pyjamas.

Good thing food porn is not against TOS!

My god, that pie is beautiful, & the pic w/ice cream puts anything Martha Stewart ever published in the shade. Are you at your mother's house? Love the vintage table covering!

Sí; ahora estamos en la casa familiar.

It was fun to make the pie. Even though my Mom has in recent years taken to using a relatively high quality frozen Reddy-Ta-Youse crust, I went ahead and made a crust from scratch, by hand. Literally, as I didn't know if there was a pastry blender amidst the vast collection of kitchen paraphernalia collected over the years. We could start a museum of kitchen tools with what's here.

So, I blended the flour and butter with my fingertips.

I didn't make the ice cream.

The pie definitely looks more than wonderful.

I think I could just enjoy the butter crust and a brown sugar butter crumb topping.

I wrote about the pie on my blog, finishing a half hour ago.
It's titled. "When It's Cherry Blossom Time In Orange, New Jersey, We'll Make a Peach of a Pie"

And I read that blog post, which is not only witty, but extremely informative, and features all-singing all-dancing all da time. :D

That is a fabulous looking pie,Don C!!! Wow!!!

After all the rains the local mushroom scene is bursting forth.
These gorgeous Chanterelles were being offered up at the market. Freshly harvested that morning.

The blue hubbard marrow.

A very tasty one that could be used for purée, soup and tart.

And a handsome squash in it's own right.

Hubba hubba -- a handsome hubbard!

If you're growing your own winter squash, one way to deal with them is dehydrating:

I've bought some vegetables at Le Potager du Roi in Versailles last week end...

There were
- "bleue d'artois" potatoes to cook a strange looking blue purée
- A big "sucrine" squash
- "Calville blanc d'hiver" apples that I used for a tatin tart...

Just wanted to say that this has become my favorite forum, not just this section, but overall. It has some of the smartest, wittiest, posters of any to which I subscribe.

I couldn't think where to post this message, and I happened to looking in here, so there it is.
Posted by bpollet on Oct 10, 2011, 1:06pm
Same for me!
I joined a few weeks ago and that's the only forum where I can talk about my two hobbies: travelling and cooking!
People here are very friendly! I would like to thank you all for the warm welcoming!

You called?

You forgot to mention irritating and facetious.
But then Kerouac can be forgiven many things.
Posted by mickthecactus on Oct 10, 2011, 2:02pm
You misheard Mark - he said smartest and wittiest. ;D

You confused that with old fart.
Posted by Don Cuevas on Oct 10, 2011, 2:21pm
I am trying to present this in a positive way.
(this can be moved to a more appropriate section thanks. )
Posted by mickthecactus on Oct 10, 2011, 2:23pm
Indeed you have Don.

My apologies if I've diluted it.
Posted by onlymark on Oct 10, 2011, 2:53pm
Damn right you should apologise mick. What an appalling breach of forum etiquette to have a punch line funnier than mine.
Posted by cheerypeabrain on Oct 10, 2011, 3:34pm
ANYWAY.....

The season here seems all upyside down...I have blossom on my apple tree and the strawberries are still producing fruit. The end is nigh....
Posted by bixaorellana on Oct 10, 2011, 3:46pm
Don Cuevas, gracious compliments such as yours are always in season. Since I've been here from the beginning, sometimes I wonder if I'm standing too close to see the forum objectively. But your taking the time to say you like it and to salute the members -- who after all, are the forum -- puts a glow on my entire day. Thank you!

And thank you, BPollet, for your warmth and willingness to jump right in, letting everyone share in your outgoing personality and excellent skills.

And you there -- the one with the Repent now! placard -- any squashes or tomatoes with 666 etched into their skins?
