I'd be happy to give you some cuttings from ours, casi. It looks a lot like tod2's variety.

We saw magnificent Pointsettias (or Christmas Flowers) in Bixa's photos of Navidad 2011 - rows and rows in beautiful profusion displayed everywhere you looked.
To my delight I was given one in a pot by the English friends that stayed with us for 2 weeks. They left on 2nd Dec - I got it a week or so before that - And look at it today!! Just fab and not a sign of fading :D

I am transfixed by & deeply admiring of the way you've teamed up all those stripe-y things on the shelf. So clever & subtle!

The zebra seem to appreciate their big red tree, too.

oooh yummy pics Bixa and Casimara....I am very jealous. ;D my bird of paradise plant has a single flower spike forming, I've had the plant for 7 - 8 years and it's never flowered before..it's in my cool conservatory so I hope that it survives. I don't know whether I should bring it indoors but worry that it wouldn't get enough light. Any advice would be gratefully received.

What a wonderful way to start the new year! Are the iris-looking flowers alpines? (see how much I've learned from you?!) And those are sempervivums next to the flowers, right? What's in the rest of the pot?

I love the golden light coming through the table to complement the blooms.

Cheery, mine was supposedly in bud when I got it (a lie). It took a year to make these few buds & the one currently open flower. I repotted it as soon as I got it, but in poor soil. According to this link, there are things we could both be doing to help our plants along. I can tell you from seeing them around here that they take very fierce sunlight.

I am filled with envy...it is so beautiful...

I think I repotted mine too often in the past. I shall keep it in the conservatory where it will get as much sun as possible. However as it's pretty gloomy here I think it might hang fire until late spring to form the actual bud...I've been duped into thinking it was in bud before only to have a new leaf appear...this time however it has a tall spike growing out of the rosette of leaves...so I'm pretty sure it's the beginnings of a flower....at least I hope it is. ;D thanks for the link. Yes,the strelitzia thrive on intense sunlight and heat here. One often sees them in huge clumps (which, btw, once established are incredibly difficult to dig up and transplant),blooming away despite appearing as though they are virtually abandoned and or neglected.
I made the mistake of planting mine in a place where I thought it would get enough sunlight to bloom prolifically and it isn't getting enough sunlight to perform properly. I know it needs to be moved,it's just a matter of where,I don't have many places with full sun in my garden.

It's Camellia time here!!!

We were at the coast last week and there were lots of camellias blooming already too. It hasn't been a cold winter here so far and the climate is milder at the ocean. I have two camellia flowers in my garden already but they are not very spectacular.

My family discovered the bird of paradise when we moved to California. We had never seen such a flower before, but in the late 1960's it was part of just about every flower arrangement. Even though it is interesting looking, I kind of think that its stiff stem gave it an unfair advantage for always standing at the back of a flower basket.

There is a hard-to-believe tree of this in bloom in Xoxo, but I was in a car & couldn't get a pic. I'll try again, but in the meantime, here's a peek at one in downtown Oaxaca:

Rikita - They are blooming in droves in my city as the creeper envelopes everything it touches - All alongside the road but I could not stop to photograph it as there are no pull-over places on this twistly steep downhill road..... :(

Ah today I got my chance to show you how they take over everything!
