So, will your seed sellers give you a refund on the seeds they shouldn't have sold you because you are in the wrong zone?

Absolutely. Run over there right now & ask for the refund. Be sure to remind them of the free bag of cookies you're supposed to get, too.

The above link is very long, but very worth it. If you don't need any of the advice in the first part ( :-/), then scroll down past the usda map to get in-depth information about planting zones all over the world.

Great news: I've found a very complete and easy-to-access group of climate zone maps. That link is now at the very top of list in the OP.

2012 USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map --

For the first time, the map is available as an interactive GIS-based map, for which a broadband Internet connection is recommended, and as static images for those with slower Internet access. Users may also simply type in a ZIP Code and find the hardiness zone for that area.

The feature of simply clicking on your state is great: http://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov/PHZMWeb/#

"SproutRobot tells you when to plant and sends you seeds."

That's the promise, although at the moment this is simply an interesting toy, as ordering seeds is "disabled". Also, I think it just works for the US. I found it online, with responding raves & gripes almost equally divided. I gave it a whirl, using Casimira's zip code, since that was my last zip in N.O. It looks right, although I think they pulled their punches by only giving the date for starting tomatoes indoors.

Anyway, see what you all think. You don't have to sign up to play with it: http://sproutrobot.com/

Found two interesting-sounding seed companies. I started to put them in "planting from seed", but figured they might be more accessible here. Please add any you all think useful. Also, any knowledge you might have of a particular company, good or bad.

Bixa, I had a look at both of these websites and although have interesting stuff I found it much harder to negotiate than my old favourite, http://rareseeds.com/

On this website they put the seeds in categories which breakdown into smaller categories and so on. Its easy to find just what may interest you.
I have bought seeds twice from them and am still going to use unopened packets this summer. I like all the Asian stuff ;D
