That's my fear, too, Spindrift -- that I'd take some living work of art & turn it into a stick overnight.

I neglected to say how much I enjoyed those photos, Mick. I can definitely see why you like that last one, with its poetic form and stateliness despite the small size. That blazing maple is pretty fine, too.

spindrift - did your friend give you some instructions about the tree? where did you keep it? do you have any idea what exactly it died from?

from the things i read so far about bonsais, apparently one of the biggest problem is that often it is assumed that they are indoor plants, when in fact most of them prefer to be outdoors. and that a lot of non-specialized shops sell cheap bonsais that aren't that strong...

well i will see how mine will fare...

Rikita - my friend only told me to keep the little tree out of doors. We have no idea why it died. I borrowed a book from him to learn something about bonsai. It died so quickly that I fear I overwatered it. My friend keeps at least 4 bonsai for his amusement. One of his died recently. He's always fussing over them and seems to know a lot and keeps the full implement of items necessary for their welfare. He buys his plants from a reputable bonsai nursery. I feel so bad about it dying but at least I gave them the pot back. :-/

well i suppose sometimes it just happens... plants are living things, and sometimes they get sick and there is not much that can be done... but overwatering sounds possible... i just realized that one of my big plants had loads of water in that thing under the pot (not sure of the name) so i removed that water because i think it is not good if it stands in water like that...

Gad, those are magnificent! I really feel guilty at tiring of my bonsai and planting it out in the garden where it appropriately snuffed it :'(

IF you like Bonsai can I recommend a book? This is my favourite book of all my books (and I have a fair few) even though I don't grow Bonsai (with one exception). It is beautiful and very inspiring because the author was the Bonsai gardener to the Japanese Imperial Household for some 60 years and takes the most mundane of plants and turns them into works of art.

Four Seasons of Bonsai by Kyuzo Murata.

hm, i fear my chinese elm tree might not have survived. i did what they recommended in the shop where my dad got it, and kept it outside (wrapped up against the cold) but maybe it was too cold... i hope it is okay - but so far, there are no buds or anything, and the old leaves look dry and dead...

my other little trees mostly seem to be alright...

i think my bonsai really is dead - though there is still green inside when i cut off a small twig, but it still has not even buds, let alone leafs, so i guess it didn't survive the winter. :(

I've seen those in the shops here. The mystery is what happens the next season. There are always magic tricks by the professionals to get plants to do unnaturally spectacular things, but they rarely never do the same thing again the following year.
