LOL!! Now that's your evil mind at work,not mine. The SHHHHHH was meant to indicate that he not know the bulb was burned out so as not to replace soon. It's not immediately as evident to him when it's burned out because it doesn't shine on him.
(I will admit to having fantasies of,I am ace with a slingshot,or I used to be.... ;))
