It's on the way, rikita -- we finally got a little relief in France. But I was talking to my colleague in Amsterdam today, and he was in complete meteorological despair.

I was happy to see the Parisian flowerbeds full of flowers again, even if they all just came from the municipal greenhouses.

i start wednesday... it is a trainee post, so time limited and not that well paid - but they said there are good chances to be taken on afterwards for a normal position - and even if not, i guess it is good to have a traineeship on the cv...

Yes, it is good. We have two temporary employees in my office who started recently, but they have an excellent chance of remaining if they work properly (and the work is not at all difficult in my office). We hired both of them at 1999€ x 14, which is a much better salary than the other departments, but it is a happy fluke. We did not have any "entry level" existing positions and we could only replace positions that already exist. Otherwise, they would have been hired at something like 1350€ x 14.

well, even the second one is quite a bit above what is normal for entry level here... then again i guess paris is also more expensive cost-of-living-wise than berlin... i won't earn much but i will be able to live on it, and that is most important, not to depend on someone else to pay the rent and buy food...

I was kind of pleased when the top boss (Regional Manager for Europe) called me into this office today to tell me that my analysis of the current company crisis was absolutely correct.

I told him that it was very important that he make some sort of reassuring communication to the staff as soon as possible, and he agreed. The only problem was that neither one of us could think of anything convincing that he could tell them.

I received an internet invitation to one of my nephews' wedding today, pending the postal document. I will not attend since it is on the other side of the world and it will take place on my very last day of work, not to mention the fact that I NEVER attend anybody's wedding. But it is always nice to be invited.

However, what meant a lot to me is the fact that this nephew is an immigration lawyer and sent a link to show that he was just chosen as one of the best immigration lawyers in San Diego, where 50% of the immigration cases of the United States take place. And there was a second link to the American Bar Association newsletter lauding his pro bono work, particularly about how he saved a handicapped and sexually abused Mexican girl from deportation, which was about to happen even though she had lived in the United States since the age of 3 months.

I am very pleased to know that somebody in the family is involved in social justice and the defense of the weak.

I've been offered more contracted hours :D Ever since OH lost his job I've been nagging my boss, they've allowed me to work lots of overtime but having the hours contracted means a boost to my pension contributions...I'm chuffed to bits.

AND my youngest son has applied for a job....fingers crossed.

Your nephew sounds like a lovely guy, Kerouac.

Congratulations, Cheery! That's sort of the gift that will keep on giving.

Did your son get the job?

This is a teensy thing that means a lot, but I'm sure some of you will identify. I'm invited to a wedding on the 2nd of June. Yesterday at the supermarket I found the perfect wedding-gift-small-appliance. Now, if I only don't forget where I stashed it before the big day.

Last night Mr. Kimby and I attended an event at the art museum honoring the group I belong to that puts on the Fifth Grade Art Experience, which has served over 25,000 school children in its 25 years of existence. When the museum director mentioned my involvement in each of those 25 years, I was given a standing ovation, my first ever!

And it was especially sweet that Mr. Kimby was at my side, hearing all the kudos given to a program that eats up so much of my time and energy for a few months each year (and storage space in my archives - see hoarding thread). Sometimes I think he doesn't appreciate the value of my volunteer work. Last night he got an earful of how much the program is appreciated from multiple sources including the mayor, a county commissioner, museum staff members, school teachers, and former and present 5th graders. It was a good night.

Well done Kimby, it is nice to read about your commitment to the Art Experience. Twenty-five years of assistance to such a cause is indeed very admirable and your husband must have been so proud to hear from others of your work. Congratulations!

Cheers!

Today I had to drag myself back to the office for the official farewell event. The regional manager for Europe made an uncharacteristically sincere-sounding speech which probably fooled a few people. When he stressed how I had fought for the benefit of the employees every step of the way and that I was often in violent opposition with him these past two years before arriving at a win-win agreement, it was a way of informing the remaining employees that it's not going to happen again, don't even try.

Anyway, so he gave me a Cerruti 1881 pen and an Ungaro wristwatch, both of which will almost certainly remain in their boxes until I have to make a gift to someone else some day, and then I received the official gifts from the employees, which was 550€ of gift certificates for the very same store where I spent 230€ yesterday (Grrrr! >:( -- but it was nice of them). But to get to the little things that mean a lot, after the official ceremony, 3 other former colleagues came to give me small individual gifts -- and that's when you know that people kind of liked you.

Hmmm. Very bittersweet, Kerouac. It does sound as though the regional manager sincerely respected you as an opponent, a particularly gratifying type of admiration, no?

Very well done Kerouac - You can let out a big sigh of relief it's over...or is it? They might find out you are indespensible and summon you back ;)

I have never heard of the pen or the watch - why are you reluctant to get use out of them? Obviously if you have a pretty good watch I can see you hanging on to the other one. I have had some nice watches over the years from Seiko's to other watches bought in America. At the moment my watch is two/three years old, is one of a pair, and was bought at a discount store for R99 (for both, my mother wears the other one) That's about 8euros. It goes just fine.
