This morning SKY News reported that Disneyland Paris were in hock for around 2billion and that last year was the first time in it's existence that an annual new attraction had not been scheduled. They went on to say that it is doubtful that the place would ever make any money. So even with hoards of visitors it stays in the red which tells me it must be incredibly expensive to run.
Also the 20th anniversary of Disneyland Paris, the most visited location in Europe.
I thought it was kind of sweet to read in the paper that Astérix and Obélix came from the Parc Astérix on the anniversary date to the entrance of Disneyland to present the park with a menhir.
I hope that the Disney people will have the same elegance when the Astérix park anniversary comes up.
I remember having cartoon comics of Asterix for our French class in primary school! I remember how much I enjoyed them. My husbands cousins go to the Asterix Theme Park frequently (as kids and now with their kids). Do you know how many years it has been open? I have had no desire to go the Disneyland there but I have wanted to go to Asterix. We are never too old, correct? Cheers, Mich
" Houston we've had a problem" 1970 ....an explosion occurred on Apollo 13. I remember listening to the unfolding story on the radio and watching it on the TV
That was a harrowing story. When I read your post, I was trying to figure out why I didn't have a clearer memory of it.
Then I counted back on my fingers & realized I was probably throwing up rather than watching tv, as I as yet unaware that I was pregnant & thought I had the flu.
I was on the national board of the Vietnam Moratorium Committee at that time, and we were preparing for the big demonstrations on April 15, so I totally missed the event as well. I was very happy to learn all about it when the movie came out years later.
April 15 marks the death of Pedro Infante in 1957. Or really, the supposed death because, as with Elvis fans, there are people who insist he is still alive.
When I first moved here, I was in an internet cafe where the young attendant was watching an old movie on tv. I asked who the actor was & the kid goggled at me so hard, it took him a moment to answer. I later realized that my question was tantamount to someone in the US not recognizing Marilyn or Elvis.
4/20 and all the Pot heads will be out in full force today and tonight. (there's a 4/20 Ball in my neighborhood tonight, there is supposed to be much food so I may go and check it out.)
Today is also the 100 year anniversary of Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox,and one of my favorite places on the planet with many, many a fond recall of baseball games there with my family and in later years while in college in Boston. They host the NY Yankees there tonight,I would kill to be there!!!
I am totally amazed, casi, that you did not bring up the 2nd anniversary of the Gulf Oil Spill which also occurred on the 20th...
I had intended on posting it in the Spill thread itself Kimby when I was on here yesterday and never got around to it. Trust me it was not forgotten, and I went to a party/benefit last night for the oyster folks of the region.

Not until June 3rd in France this year. I think it is normally supposed to be the last Sunday in May "unless" some sort of other conditions come into play. And then Father's Day is two weeks later, I think.
I'll be attending "the event" at the nursing home as usual.

i just called my mom for mothers day. she told me she called my grandma earlier for mothers day, and my grandma said "oh, you forgot about mother's day". my mom said "i didn't, else why would I call you for it now?" to which my grandma replied in a very reproaching tone "but you are the last of my kids to call me today." ... (this wasn't late in the evening or anything, but late afternoon)

well on other days she is very nice and sweet and all... but lately she has these weird behaviours at times... like also she left a box of sweets for me with my mom, as my easter present. i saw that my brother S's box of sweets had some money in it - appareantly because he earns less than me. fair enough i thought. but then my mom said that she actually didn't even buy sweets at all for my brother K. - because it was his birthday recently, so he doesn't need an easter present. and that part is a bit weird too... (as K. wasn't there that day though, we just never told him that S. and I got easter presents from grandma...)

I have heard of the same thing from a German friend from Dusseldorf and also a Swiss German friend from Lenzburg. I hesitate to call the weird "money/gift" thing Germanic, but it does tend to make me wonder.
The only other example that somebody told me was a friend from Boston, but her family was also of German origin.
