Topic Summary
Posted by kerouac2 on Apr 28, 2011, 1:06pm
Well, I finally had my first bout of gout this week. I think I recognized it immediately because my doctor has been predicting it for years, due to my high levels of uric acid. And when I thought of how much seafood I've eaten this week, I thought aha! and then damn! Frankly, I am not finding it pleasurable.

Naturally, I looked it up on the internet, and there's one thing I don't understand. It says it affects middle aged men mostly. Needle-like crystals stabbing your toe like devils with pitchforks. Since I am barely out of adolescence, how can this be? :-/

You have it too? Hooray!!

I'm not alone.....................
Posted by rikita on Apr 28, 2011, 1:40pm
what is gout?
Posted by kerouac2 on Apr 28, 2011, 2:36pm
If you're lucky, you'll never need to know.
Posted by mickthecactus on Apr 28, 2011, 2:41pm
I currently have it in a toe and instep.

My husband suffers from it too! :(

Posted by lagatta on Apr 28, 2011, 11:36pm
It is part of the great arthritis/rheumatism family!

A fellow I know had his first attack when in Argentina, eating copious amounts of red and organ meat, and plenty of very tannic red wine. He's been fine since.

For my father it is strawberries.
Cheers,
Mich

It is triggered by different foods for different people. For my husband,it is the red meat, read wine that triggers it. Shellfish is notorious for triggering it in others. Some get it from drinking too much beer. I don't think there is any hard and fast line on any certain food.
I do know that the Black Cherry extract ,if one drink sit on a regular basis,is a preventative.

The very first bout of gout that my husband got many years ago was so painful that it prompted him to go to the emergency room. My husband never goes to an emergency room unless it's really serious. (27 years as an EMS :-/)

I confirm that there are moments of agony. It is so strange that a big toe can cause so much pain.
Posted by mickthecactus on Apr 29, 2011, 7:32am
Indeed. And it tends to come on in the night whilst you are asleep.
Posted by casimira on May 1, 2011, 10:47am
My husband says that even a lightweight cotton bedsheet touching the affected area was incredibly painful.
Posted by kerouac2 on May 1, 2011, 11:06am
Yes, you pretty much have to leave your foot out of the bed during the worst of the attack.

Casi - you are right about the black cherries but it doesn't just have to be extracted juice...even tinned (canned) whole black cherries are excellent for taking the pain of gout. Better if they are fresh of course but as they are not always in season, tinned ones are nearly as good.

eat plenty of asparagus... it's the season. should help provided you drink enough water with it.
yes to cherries and all the other diuretics such as dendelion leaves (in a salad maybe?) and similar delicacies.

just be careful not to overdose on those diuretic things like an acquaintance did several years ago, when he decided he was going on a "cherry diet" he ate loads and loads of cherries and only that for about 10 days, but naturally, he didn't want to drink lots of water as he was afraid it would bring about belly ache... well, it was worse. His kidneys stopped working and he required hospital intervention. I am only saying this as a cautionary tale. I am sure you won't abuse of all these products.
I hope gout goes fast.

modified to add that I do not know the state of your kidneys so obviously if you know you cannot have food that stimulates your kidneys... please be very careful.. and anyway listen to your GP.

My doctor told me that one of the pills he was prescribing had a possible side effect of diarrhea. All I can say is that he certainly was not kidding. :-/

Yes,of course fresh ones are equally as effective. I only mentioned the extract because it's the most readily available here. The local pharmacy carries it in their dietary supplement section.

Tomorrow I will discover my uric acid levels, if they still fit on the chart for the blood test.

My sister swears chickweed is super for gout. It comes in capsule form so you don't have to painfully hobble through the dense forests of Paris gathering it from the wild.

It would probably be wise to check if it there could be some negative interaction from using it with any prescribed medicine.

I can attest to that....

My grandmother often used plantain leaves on sores, and they really worked.
Posted by auntieannie on May 3, 2011, 6:56pm
Can you find them (plantain leaves) where you live, K?

Say if you want me to copy what Bartram's encyclopedia of herbal medicine says of gout.

Posted by kerouac2 on May 3, 2011, 7:20pm
In downtown Paris? No.

I have read enough of what the web has to say about gout already.

What is annoying is that I got my blood test results back today and my uric acid levels are normal! >:( I didn't even deserve gout!
Posted by mickthecactus on May 13, 2011, 12:23pm
Got gout again in my left instep. I've taken a couple of tablets which have pretty much cleared it up but played havoc with my stomach.

Sigh..............
Posted by kerouac2 on May 13, 2011, 5:42pm
Oh, I'm really sorry for you! I am making believe that I am cured definitively, but I have not quite totally stopped the pills yet, although I am now down to every other day...
Posted by kerouac2 on May 14, 2011, 11:16am
Mick, my stuff flared up again today, too, and I am holding you responsible for bringing up the subject! >:( And I did absolutely nothing to warrant it starting again! (I am reaching the end of the medicine I was prescribed, so if it doesn't not die down by the end of the weekend, I am good for another visit to the doctor! :( )
Posted by mickthecactus on May 16, 2011, 8:34am
Sorry K2.............

Keep off that red wine...

Thank God I'm a young guy ;)

I saw the huge build up of fluid around my knee on the monitor when it was being X-rayed - I saw it squirt out when the doc inserted the needle and extracted some to be sent to the lab. Gout, nothing but gout he said. I'm on Puricos 300mg - (one a day) and now have no gout. The pharmacist said that wine, red or white, did very little to contribute to gout. Boy was I pleased to hear that! I know that shellfish do not have the bad impact on cholesterol the lab boys first thought it had but as to gout damage - that I don't know.
On our travels earlier in May we met an Irish hotelier who said his doctor told him the very very worst thing anyone can eat for gout is gravy made from the delicious meat juices in the roasting pan! Ouch! What is more gorgeous than a good homemade gravy poured onto a chunk of roast beef! Oh gawd, I suppose we should cancel the beef as well!

Water and more water is a good way to get rid of those chrystals.
