Although some actors, directors and other luminaries will warrant separate threads, it will also be good to have one thread for posting notices of deaths of people from the movie industry.

Farley Granger has died at age 85.

For many of us, Granger, Jane Russell, and others were really stars of our parents' generation, known to us mostly from late night movies on tv.

This wikipedia article states that it "may need to be wikified". Whatever -- it's great fun reading, full of detail and gossip.

I just read that he played the part of the marshal for twenty years. Never realized the show went on for that long.

I loved that series and especially Harry Morgan - funnily enough yesterday my husband was offered a ride in a Huey helicopter but unfortunately was out of town so couldn't make it. Don't know how the heck it happened to be at our local airport but I'll find out tonight.

Here's a trivia question from something I remember, but that seems to have faded from popular memory:
Does anyone remember Col. Potter's first appearance on MASH & how the character was depicted? Actually, that should be re-phrased as Harry Morgan's first appearance on the show, as I don't remember if he was playing Potter then or not.

Cheetah, chimp star of classic Tarzan movies, dies at 80

Cheetah the Chimp, who appeared in classic Tarzan movies in the early 1930s, has died of kidney failure at the age of 80, WTSP TV reports reports.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, Fla., says the community "has lost a dear friend and family member" with the death of Cheetah on Dec. 24.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb tells The Tampa Tribune that the chimp was outgoing, loved finger-painting and liked to see people laugh.

Cobb says Cheetah came to the sanctuary from the estate of Johnny Weissmuller, former American Olympic gold medal swimmer who played Tarzan in the 1930s.

Cheetan played Tarzan's comic sidekick from 1932 to 1934, the sanctuary tells WTSP.

Ron Priest, a sanctuary volunteer for seven years, tells the newspaper that Cheetah stood out with his ability to stand up and walk like a human, with shoulders tall, and back straight.

Cobb says the average chimp survives 25 to 35 years in the wild and 35 to 45 years in zoos.

Goodbye little guy.

That's pretty amazing that he lived so long. An interesting tidbit in the article is quickly passed over: "... Cheetah came to the sanctuary from the estate of Johnny Weissmuller..." That means that Cheetah & Tarzan really did hang out together!

If you use human life expectancy x 2 to calculate Cheetah's age, he lived to be 160! :)

Well, Theo Angelopoulos was behind the camera instead of on the screen, but his accidental death is a major tragedy for Greek cinema. Getting run over by a policeman is really bad luck, though!

As for James Farentino, I still remember him when he was young and never saw him past age 70.

I thought this was a funny tidbit:

"Asked about his acting methods in 1973, Mr. Borgnine told The New York Times: 'No Stanislavsky. I don’t chart out the life histories of the people I play. If I did, I’d be in trouble. I work with my heart and my head, and naturally emotions follow.'

Sometimes he prayed, he said, or just reflected on character-appropriate thoughts. 'If none of that works,' he added, 'I think to myself of the money I’m making.'"

Whatever he did worked, because he was a great actor.

That was my thought, as well. It gave way to jealous resentment of Anghared Rees for having had a relationship with Alan Bates.

Goodbye to Tony Scott. Not a great director, but most people remember Top Gun, True Romance or, more recently Unstoppable.
