It does seem very Woody Allen-esque.
Just out of curiosity, Kerouac, about how many movies do you see in the theaters a year? You're always on top of what's new!

I see about 100 movies a year on the big screen.

So I started the day with The Artist, which is just as good as all of the critics have said. Since it will be released in the U.S. at the end of November and the Weinsteins have already decided that it is going to be the movie they will push for the Oscars, it will be interesting to see if they have any success. Last year the movie they promoted for the Oscars was The King's Speech.
It's impossible to know at the moment if a silent black and white movie has any chance at all with the general public. It is pretty sure to do well in France (French movie starring a very popular actor). However, it should please the film industry, which is who votes for the Oscars, because it was filmed in Hollywood and all of the supporting roles are American. And any movie about the film industry gets bonus points with the film industry -- duh!
Frankly, I thought it was fantastic.

I am very pleased to see that The Artist is being received by viewers and critics just as well as I had hoped.

We saw Tinker Tailor etc the other night, thought it was very well done, if difficult to follow for the first roughly 5/6ths. A wickipedia prep would've helped.

Why I don't get into spy movies.
Maybe it's just me. Once I asked my husband what I thought was a reasonable question about some plot element in a spy movie. He said he was positive that I had been in the room the whole time the movie was on, but apparently not.

I haven't seen Tinker, Tailor (I read the book years ago so I know the ending), but I assume it's made to be confusing since the whole point of the film is to unmask the mole and nobody knows who he is. It wouldn't work if the audience knew who the mole is and watched the film thinking, "come on, Smiley, it's so obvious!".

We loved The Artist a couple of weeks ago.
Do you think we were supposed to conclude that
he wouldn't have made it in talkies because of his French accent?
Saw TheDescendents last night. It was entertaining and well put together, but not something I'd urge everyone to run and see. A bit on the soapy side maybe?
It requires the viewer to view marital infidelity as something huge. I just don't, despite never having fit fooling around into my own busy schedule. I did tell my husband that if boyfriends started coming out of the woodwork on my demise that he should go ahead and forgive them.

I saw the new Girl With the Dragon Tattoo after renting the Swedish one. I liked both portrayals of Lisbeth Salander very much. The first one was fierce, whereas the second one's toughness was leavened with vulnerability. She wasn't better or worse, just different. I liked Daniel Craig's Blomqvist better, the first guy was boring.

I went to the "Big Scream" with a friend and her baby, to watch "The Artist". Very very nice! loved it! and so did the baby! And my friend too! She said it was the film she had been most looking forward to viewing in months.
The "Big Scream" is a special showing of a film for parents with babies. The light isn't as dim as usual and if baby cries a little bit, nobody cares.

I went to see The Darkest Hour yesterday, not because I have any interest in 3D alien invasion movies, but because I wanted to see modern Moscow, and it was totally satisfactory in that department. I was rather dismayed to watch Emile Hirsch's career beginning to go down the drain by doing this kind of stuff, but he was clearly so much better than any of the other actors that he almost saved the movie. Oh, but the other actors were so appallingly bad that I doubt whether they could even be cast in a Final Destination movie (which on second thought is probably where they came from).

I saw Tamara Drewe a 2010 comedy film directed by Stephen Frears, shot in and around a Dorset village and loosely based on Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd. This was a pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.

My husband took me on a date night and after dinner we went to see the new Sherlock Holmes movie. I quite enjoyed it, much of the dialog I had difficulty with, however, visually it was remarkable for me.

I thought that Tamara Drewe was delightful and rather weird (English ).

Is that the one with Robert Downey Jr., Mich? I liked that movie & I didn't like it, but I agree that visually it was wonderful.
I remember a good while back there was mention of Tamara Drewe, & I think even a youtube trailer. But I had no idea it was based on Far from the Madding Crowd!
NYCGirl -- thanks for your comments on GWTDT. I huffily announced that I would never go see the Hollywood version. However, back in the 70s I also huffily announced that I'd stop driving if gas got to a dollar a gallon. After reading what you had to say, I'm now quite curious about the new GWTDT.

Yes, the new release with Robert Downey Jr. Bixa. Sometimes I believe I benefit from not understanding the dialog because I then concentrate on the visual and in this film it was extraordinary!

I remember enjoying the visuals from the last episode. I saw it in London during a snowstorm while my colleagues were wondering where I had disappeared for the evening during a seminar. I had seen enough of them!
The new one comes out here tomorrow, and I will certainly go to see it as well.

After you see it Kerouac I hope to read what your thoughts were. I found it beautiful because the landscapes, to me, were integral to how I interpreted the film. Cheers! Mich
P.S. In Canada they are considering offering alcoholic beverages in the theater.

my favourite small cinema chain - specialising in non-mainstream films, although you can catch quality mainstream there as well, benefits from a comfy licensed bar and you can take your glass inside the room, - but they give you a plastic recipient if it is not to drink at the bar itself.

No alcohol in French cinemas.
I haven't yet bought this week's Pariscope to plan my weekend.

Auntieannie have you encountered louder more boisterous people in the theater? Has it annoyed you or ruined your night out at the movie? That is what I am concerned about. There always seem to be people that take it too far and in a bar/pub alright, but when I am trying to watch a film? I just do not know what to think about this.

You can buy wine and beer in several of the artier (artyer? more arty?) movie theaters around here, and there's a full bar in Moolah Theater Lounge. This is one of our favorite places to see a movie, with a balcony and a big old fashioned screen.

Since we tend to go to artier more artsy films, the rowdy crowd hasn't been a factor.
PS There's a bowling alley in the basement.

Still hoping for opinions on my The Artist spoiler question above. That's been my favorite of the new crop. For my husband, Midnight in Paris is neck and neck.

Okay, never mind. I looked for an opinion on wickipedia, and caught a glimpse of a corroborating impression before I got the page saying Wickip is going black for a day.

That looks Art Deco'ish from a distance.
Great name too - moolah is slang for money.

Mich, my experience is the same as lola. Artsy fartsy films all the way for me so no rowdy crowds. and I don't think the ushers would allow a drunk person in the theatre itself. People don't go to that bar to get drunk.
