I have a copy of The Wrestler that I want to see soon. Last movie we watched was Ghost town, which was alright.

Just finished watching The Wrestler. Good movie, good performance from Mickey. Kind of a darker Rocky type thang. A couple of bits toward the end are a tad contrived or cliched, but overall a good show.

Not necessarily something to watch if you're in need of cheering up though ....

Among the movies I saw over the weekend, I saw that thing with Clive Owen and Julia Roberts -- Duplicity. They have pretty good screen chemistry, but I thought that for a piece of fluff, the movie was unnecessarily complicated. To its credit, it made no use of car chases, explosions or blood loss.

Today I went to see the Czech film Country Teacher, an excellent tale of romantic and sexual upheaval set in Czech farm country. It was extremely interesting from an anthropological standpoint, showing the importance of alcohol in peasant life among other things. There are also two birth scenes with calves, completely authentic and fraught with suspense. (I was wondering among other things how much training the actors had received for doing this sort of thing, because it sure as hell didn't look easy.)

I went to see Watchmen last night. I am not a fan of superhero films but the trailer looked so dark I had to go and see it. It was great, very dark and gritty, very highly stylised; every image was so carefully thought out. Not as much action as most of these kind of films but maybe that is what I liked about it. Some of the reveiws say it is too long, I did start to drift off towards the end but I wouldn't have wanted it to stop any sooner as was quite entranced.

I went to see a horror movie today in which Zac Efron turned into Matthew Perry. Oh, what a sad and terrible thing to happen!

I saw a very strange Argentine movie today: La sangre brota

It follows the lives of various people who seem to have no relation to each other (yes, that is a whole genre in itself now) -- a young ecstasy dealer, a taxi driver, an erotic nymphette, etc...

And yes, there is plenty of impure blood in it, although nobody dies.

I haven't seen many movies lately - the last was Duplicity. Okay for what it was, but not memorable since I had forgotten that I had seen it before reading Kerouac's post above.

We went to see Easy Virtue last night. The stupid French title was "Un Mariage de Rêve" (A Dream Marriage). It was pretty good, although some of the casting was strange and bits were predictable. But I enjoyed the dialogue. Most of the people reading subtitles would have missed the puns and English humour.

My last movie was Angels and Demons. I'm a movie buff. I usually go to the matinees as they are cheaper and much less crowded. Some of the recent movies I have seen are Dark Knight, X Files, Iron Man, Body of Lies, Fast and The Furious, Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull, National Treasure, and several others I can't remember. I took my two oldest grandsons to Wall E, Horton Hears A Who, Monsters vs Aliens, and The Pink Panther II. I like anything with Nicholas Cage, or Harrison Ford, although he is getting pretty old. I love the Indiana Jones type movies. And probably my favorite series was the Bourne movies, Bourne Identity, Bourne Supremacy, and Bourne Ultimatum. They were awesome in my opinion.

I saw 'Les Beaux Gosses' which was part of the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes film festival even though it qualifies as a 'teen comedy.' I am wondering if they will change the title for release in Québec due to a major variation in the meaning of the word 'gosses' between French and Québecois.

I watched The Duchess with Keira Knightly last night, she didn't annoy me as she usually does, she was good i'll give it to her.

I really enjoyed it and the story, which was based on real life, was fascinating. Oh and of course - the costumes!

Saw Duchess recently also, agree with you tilly on all counts, especially the costumes. I do like those period pieces quite a lot. The book was good too.

It's a shame that I have little interest in watching films on video, because I was quite tempted by the Virgin Megastore offer on the Champs Elysées yesterday. The market for that kind of item is collapsing so rapidly that even most of the recent DVD's were being sold 5 for 30€ or 10 for 50€. A just-released DVD is generally put on the market somewhere between 19€ and 24€ and most of the ones on sale had only been out for 3 months or so.

It's the only way I watch them. The last feature film I saw at a cinema was Midnight Express... yes, that's 30 years ago.

My husband practically tied me to a chair to rewatch Midnight Express before leaving for Turkey.

I just walked over to the local movie theatre to see Good Morning, England but they had gone and changed the programme on me. So now I'll go tomorrow night. I prefer going out to movies too -- there is just something about sitting in front of a big screen rather than in front of a TV or a computer.

Thanks for the recommendations on The Duchess. It's the kind of movie I enjoy, but had avoided it strictly because of Keira Knightly.

(& I will mention here again that The Young Victoria is totally worth seeing for the costumes alone!)

This weekend I watched Ali, it was OK but much blander/ordinary than I imagined it would be there was nothing outstanding about it and given the subject I thought there would be, and Talk to Her (Habla con Ella), l love, love, loved it...haven't seen an Almodavar film I don't love yet.
