I love Shawshank Redemption.

It's such a shame that Forrest Gump won the Oscar for Best Picture over Shawshank [i][and/i] Pulp Fiction back in 1995. In retrospect, that was a really bad call.

Am I right in saying Shawshank wasn't that much of a hit to start with?

Forrest Gump was OK, Pulp Fiction not for me. Shawshank infinitely better.

Shawshank got fabulous reviews from the critics as soon as it came out, but the public did not pay attention to it until it got a bunch of Oscar nominations and was re-released. Even so, the box office receipts barely covered the production costs.

It has become much more successful as a cult classic.

I have watched the Merlin episodes regarding Lancelot a number of times and am quite upset by his fate, him being the most noble and perfect of knights according to legend. What happens in "The Darkest Hour" (season 4, episodes 1 & 2) is already horrible enough, but what happens in the later "Lancelot du Lac" episode is quite simply unbearable.

Don't tell me! Don't tell me! Don't tell me! Don't tell me! Don't tell me! Don't tell me! Don't tell me!

There is no more Camelot to watch (drat, drat, drat), so I went back to Merlin. It has started picking up in interest for me, with some excellent suspense at times.

I restrict myself to one episode per day, but broke the rule yesterday because I simply HAD to see the 2nd part of "Beauty & the Beast".
The woman who played the Lady Katrina was GREAT. She threw herself into the role with excellent comedic zeal.

I totally love the dragon.

Yes, the actress clearly enjoyed herself.

Basically though, the whole series doesn't get really interesting until after Uther is out of the way once and for all. Up until then, you can blame a lot of what goes wrong on his pigheadedness. Once he is finally dead, the problems shift a lot more to Arthur's inexperience.

However, it is necessary to love Morgana. She is one of the most evil persons ever to have existed (and yet, you saw how she was still hesitating in season 1).

A monumental scene with her:

Knight of Camelot: I will tell you nothing except under the most extreme torture. (or some such)

Morgana: I was hoping you would say that. (broad smile)

There's a new series starting next week in France which is creating a bit of buzz: Kabul Kitchen. It's about a French expat running a restaurant & pool in Afghanistan in the last decade. They are implying that it is a comedy, but something tells me they are hiding quite a bit and it is not really going to be as ha-ha funny as they would like people to believe.

(Merlin does not get many chances to fall in love.)

Oooooo ~~ The Witch's Quickening, Season 2, Episode 11 of Merlin.

I was wondering how they could make it logical for Morgana to turn, but they worked it out beautifully.

A Room with a View is such a hoot. I hadn't seen it again since it first came out on the big screen, so I didn't even know who was in it anymore other then Denholm Elliot. So it made it all the more amusing to see those Harry Potter women Maggie Smith and Helena Bonham Carter as the stars.

Night before last I watched Merlin episode 2, season 3 -- the second part of The Tears of Uther Pendragon, which was great. Last night it was that fluffy episode about the goblin.

I'm not going to gripe anymore about the weak episodes. They probably keep the ratings up which should keep the show in production.

Re: round table -- I have to say I really liked the way the round table was made in Camelot, a show unfairly cut off in its prime.

Anybody ever watch Lost Girl? I saw the pilot last night & was drawn in.

Watched Incendies last night. Despite some too-facile coincidences, this one was gripping.

The (French) Canadians make some great films. We also loved Les invasions barbares

Those look good, Kimby, particularly Incendies.

Season 3, Episode 8 of Merlin, "The Eye of the Phoenix" ~~ absolutely the best so far!

The coincidences that take place in Incendies are pretty extreme -- but pretty much all of the coincidences in both drama and comedy over the past 500 years are quite similar. When you think of all of the sudden revelations of who is actually who in Shakespeare or Molière, you realize that we spectators just eat up this stuff. And of course, who can forget Oedipus?

Is anyone hooked on Downton Abbey?

We've been hearing great things about this "Upstairs, Downstairs" type of drama, airing on PBS in the states. We have recorded the entire 2nd season without watching an episode so that we can watch the first season first (I've requested it from the library).

Eventually we will watch some/all of the first 7 seasons of 24. If anyone knows which years were the best, we might just watch those.

Kimby, I used to watch 24. I saw the first three seasons/days I think and maybe a bit of the fourth. after that I lost access/interest.

I say do watch the first season. It was really good.
Of the following years, I don't remember if I liked the second or the third best. I think the fourth started better at least than one of these two mentioned previously.
There are moments (over years 2-3-4) when it goes completely OTT / ::).
It was interesting to remember that it came out of Fox studios.
