(that's him on the left).

Yep. This is how I spend my Friday nights. With ale as comfort, and all hairy and wearing sandals, obviously ....

Yes, could be. I thought Gyro goes to the pub to hear him play.
BTW, I always thought Eric Clapton was England's best guitar player.

Sorry, but Slash is the greatest English guitar player. I am wondering if that is Gyro in the pic? I am sure Gyro has more hair than that, surely?

Yeah, but those aren't sandals. Maybe an old pic though, and his hair could have grown more.

Considering it's a very basic camera on the phone, I don't think it's too bad an image.

His name is Pete Smith. You wouldn't have heard of him, but in terms of playing the guitar, he is bloody amazing.

Slash ? hahahahahaha ! Stoke produces better pottery than it does idiotic electric axe merchants .. !

Fuck me, why don't you just edit the words and pictures as well to suit yourself ?

Pedantry? Is that anything like being pointlessly arch ....... as in posting a photo of an artist whose name only you knew, then not giving any details?

Pointlessly arch, no ? But a little assumptive based on my knowledge? Yes, possibly.

But please, feel free to change these words or move them somewhere else. I wouldn't want to get in the way of YOUR idea of everything.

Thing is, some may laugh at the term 'folk' music, but by and large, it's ALWAYS a good thing to experience any sort of live music.

Took my daughter to a couple more bands on Saturday night, and she now slightly appreciates a bit of Bluesy type stuff. Which she never would have done before.

I have always liked folk music, but just about ONLY if it is live. It loses too much by being recorded for some reason. There is a lot of folk ambience in a folk performance that can never be carried over to a recording.

Good point about live music ~~ it somehow brings home more what music is about and lets the ears learn about sound outside the studio. Same thing with folk music -- it may be a revelation to kids to hear "plainer" versions of music.

As far as what's lost in recording folk music, I thought the brilliance of Pete Smith's playing came across really well in that 2nd video, although of course I've never seen him in person.

He also had an amaaaazing piece of technology for the speakers. Again, it's not very clear in the pic, but that thin black 'tower' between the two is a Bose speaker thing. In terms of stage playing, it blows away the traditional box speakers either side of them that other performers use. Not only is the sound much much clearer and is almost impossible to create feedback, but also it apparently manages to ensure the volume stays the same no matter how far away you are from it. Within reason. It also has the advantage of the performers being able to hear themselves as they play.

Originally, it was designed to be placed one per musician, but works well with two guitar players as in the pic. He's seen a band at a Wembley Arena have one each behind them, and that alone was enough to fill the place, sound-wise, without any further speaker system(s).

Look what I found: http://petesmithguitarist.com/html/home.html. (on the search page it says "best viewed in internet explorer" -- I looked at it in firefox & it seemed fine)
Check out his schedule of gigs. Gyro, did you get to go see him on Sunday?
