Yes, real lapis. (I asked) Lapis is a 'non-precious' stone and not that expensive, they may have been given a good deal given the illustrious setting of where it was to be placed...la Mosquee de Paris. Sadly, it isn't there any more.

Okay ~~ I wasn't trying to be all artsy in the pictures below, merely attempting to photograph the takeoff from Mexico City in a heavily vibrating airplane. (they came out pretty, though, didn't they? :D)
