I like the last one, looks solid. A bit like I'd like the dashboard of my car to look like, brushed aluminium. This will be too heavy.

Thanks HW. Not only are they heavy but loud. When I lived in NYC you would hear the garbage being picked up by the sanitation crews early, early in the a.m. and the lids crashing down. One after another...(hell on a hangover...).
I don't think they are used much anymore.

It's true that in reliable modern urban settings, one does not see manholes open nearly as much as in the old days. Fewer leaks, better materials -- not a bad thing.

Most of our manhole covers are not this photogenic.

I am thrilled to see you post in here,Kimby. And that's a beaut!
One of the things I'm most looking forward to on my upcoming trip to NYC is scoping out the man hole covers and shooting!! It can get dangerous though, all that looking down, and people really look at you funny when they see what you're photographing.Obviously, doesn't stop me. :)

I'm sure it does. (I remember stairs that were almost completely filled in with sand, so you could only get a toe on the edge as you ascended. End of side-track.)

That conEdison one is quite '30s elegant. Those are great pictures, with so much depth of color and great contrast -- not easy in bright light, especially with water on the subject.

I really like the Con Ed one too. It's funny what you say though about the light,water...I somehow find that the ones with the water are easier to photograph. There's several I took in NYC that I'm very disappointed in because the light was way too bright.
Here's a couple more,these are all NYC,downtown,and around Chinatown.

I was nearly in a fight over this photo when Mr. Algerian Testosterone Sewer Worker said that it was illegal and that I must delete it in front of him. I stood my ground and received backup from a passerby. It is sometimes ridiculous the unimportant things for which I risk my wellbeing.

This is not a manhole cover, but has the feeling of one.
It is a compass rose of sorts in a pedestrian walkway downtown.
