Hey ~~ thanks, y'all!
I'm thinking we're all going to be surprised by what we might have stashed in our photo collections that could be blown into this thread. I had those first two pictures saved on the computer, but then walked into my bedroom yesterday evening and thought, "Aha!"

Great, Spindrift! All that immensity and the flapping and thrumming of the flags -- you really captured it!
Are the white parts the accumulation of prayer flags?

Bixa - not they are not....the white parts that you see are white silk kata...this means long scarves. It is the Nepali custom to offer kata to guests, new arrivals, people who are departuring and also mountain passes. The giver of the kata holds it lengthwise in his hands, the receiver makes namaste with his hands and lowers his head slightly...The giver drapes the kata over his namasted hands onto his lower arms.
I don't go on treks without many folded kata in my travelpack so that I may give them to people in the same fashion (or tie them to other offerings on mountain passes). It is rather different to offer prayer flags on the mountain passes because before they are tied on, they must be blessed by a lama and it's not always easy to find one. It's also the custom to place a stone from lower down the mountain onto the pile of stones at the top where the prayer flags are offered. There are several styles of prayer flags but I can go into that another time.

Kerouac, your last two are so happy and alive.
Rikita, incredible study! My immediate reaction was "La Strada!"

Oh my goodness Bixa I'd forgotten about putting it here as well! To answer your questions: My niece "Flygirl" (who has her own website - just Google Gaynor Schoeman Flygirl) and you will see the technicality of the whole process. She has just passed a major flight exam so has another feather in her cap!

Bixa - that could be an option but she has such a brilliant website I feel I could not do her career justice. Most of her life has been spent away from South Africa travelling the world. In May she goes back to Australia to start teaching paragliding. New photos to appear soon!
