The patina'd ribbon across this compass rose represents the river, and an unofficial slogan of Missoula is "A River Runs Through It" from the Norman Maclean novella by that title, also a major motion picture some years ago.
(Ironically NOT filmed in Missoula because too much has changed since the time in which the book was set, both in the downtown and in the Blackfoot River Valley. Plus the movie stars all have ranches in the Paradise Valley near the river that stood in for the Blackfoot.)

These are gorgeous Kimby, the first one in particular. I love this stuff, the color I would love to emulate in a room, that fabulous shade of blue/green.
Here's a gorgeous Broadway theatre with it:

And a huge door in Chinatown: (I would kill to have a copper door like this!!)

I'm glad to see something new on this thread because I keep thinking about it and then hesitating about the true meaning of patina. It is one of the threads to which I really want to contribute but have not managed to do so yet....

These are really, really fabulous Bixa. Thanks. I know there's a whole lot more patina out there than people realize or take the time to see and appreciate. These are stunning examples. I just love them!!

Your patina was worth waiting for, Kerouac!
I have to say that the big Chinatown door is one of my favorite photos of the entire forum.

Point of order: Can a ceramic glaze that is patina-colored be said to "have a patina"? Just wondering what we're looking at in #14.

What exactly is patina-colored?

Patina is a tarnish or discoloration - an alteration - that happens to a surface, often metal. The typical color seems to be a bluish green. Your beautiful border appears to be made of ceramic tile, which would have a glaze that is glasslike and not alterable. Therefore though it may be the right color, it would not technically be "patina". I have not googled "patina" however. This is just me spouting my understanding of the concept.

Kimby, patina can be a color, as in the first definition here. You can also call the color verdigris.
However, I think it's been established that for the purposes of this thread, patina can also mean the 2nd & 3rd definitions in the first link: 2. The sheen on any surface, produced by age and use. 3. A change in appearance produced by long-standing behavior, practice, or use: a face etched with a patina of fine lines and tiny wrinkles. also: 3. the sheen on a surface that is caused by much handling
I'll leave it to Casimira, as the OP, to say if I'm right or not, but I'm going on her comment in one of the posts above: Apr 6, 2011, 11:09am, casimira wrote:| I know there's a whole lot more patina out there than people realize or take the time to see and appreciate. |

Kerouac's tiles show evidence of mineral build-up from water over the years, plus a general softening of their look due to exposure, thus, they have a patina. It's immediately obvious that they're not new, but mellowed with age.
Waddayathink?

My goodness,I hadn't seen many of these. I just love your #14 Kerouac and Bixa, your previous one from a few days ago is fabulous.
It's curious that the literal definition of patina is being bantered about, goggled, whatever. It was never my intent when starting the thread. And,the pic I am posting tonite that I dithered about where to post happens to highlight just what I meant. Yes,cabbage at the market,it does,in my mind's eye, have a 'patina' about it.

It's the house of slaves on the island of Gorée in Senegal, which was used as one of the main boarding points for travel to the Americas.
