I love rain. The two photos in #23 are beautiful, Kerouac, especially the second. Paris is the loveliest city I have ever been in when it rains, it takes on a whole new personna. The palette of greys and mauves and purples...

A university friend from Los Angeles came to visit once. He enjoyed Paris moderately until the day it started to rain. He returned that night mesmerized by the rain: "I have never seen a city that becomes so beautiful when it is wet!" He went on for hours about how the rain had completely transformed his vision and appreciation of Paris.

That's a beautiful photo, Rikita. It's lovely to see the rainy cityscapes followed by this one that's all nature.

kimby, everyone has the thing where you turn on a tap and sprinklers pop up from your lawn. Or at least we posh people do. For the rest of them they just use hose pipes.

No rationing of water for non-essential uses like lawns and washing cars?
What is the municipal water source? Deep wells, purified surface water?

The Nile Kimby. The Nile.
Apart from an underground aquifer - The Nubian Sandstone aquifer located under the Western Desert is considered an important groundwater source, but this is fossil groundwater.
plus some renewable groundwater and some well water out in the oases, it's all out of the Nile.
Water supply is about 92% from the Nile.
There is no restriction on water. Ever.

They will cut it off from time to time but there are no meters or anything.
Agriculture accounts for 86% of the usage, industry and domestic about 7% each, so to them it's hardly worth restricting domestic users (it's just not practical to put meters for everyone) when agriculture uses so much in relation.
Hence if I had a swimming pool I could re-fill it every week and nobody is bothered.

That's Egypt for you.

What an absolutely beautiful photo, Jazz! I've said this before, but I always love the palettes in your pictures -- frequently muted, but always rich.

(what's that thing that looks like a submerged roof -- any idea?)

Ha! Not at all, it was about 33 that day and it was great to sit under the umbrella and enjoy the fresh and cooling rain. (with a glass of wine)

Georgian Bay rocks are beautiful and I am hoping to whip together a thread to show a bit of this lovely area.

Beautiful moody shot, but I am always jealous when I see bands of rain in the distance. I always want them for myself instead of some place 20 km away getting all that lovely rain!

i might describe how i did that (using gimp) at some point. it isn't that difficult, just used two layers, and a bit of c&p-ing...
