What if those big nasty birds swoop down and carry him off? :o

Thank you Bixa - I agree, he is rather gorgeous ;)

Kerouac, those kites just swooped down and maneuvered themselves between the food and the kid!

Yesterday I was out at the end of my street taking some (failed) "art" pictures. Three girls came along from the store, and I pointed the camera at them and pretended to take a picture. Then I laughed and told them I was faking. They all said, "But we want you to take our picture!"

They posed and I snapped off three group shots -- one full-length and the other two closer in. The results were interesting. The one who I would have said was the beauty of group didn't outshine the other two in photos. Then, when I cropped the group shots to make individual portraits, each girl's loveliness really sprang into focus.

See what you all think.

The first girl took a less glamorous shot, but look at those eyes!

I think those are stunning portraits.

Absolutely! Well done Bixa - Did you give them a print as well?

Wow -- happy accident! She's a beautiful girl (obviously the bead-flingers thought so, too) and with that pensive expression, the darkness behind her. and the flambeau flames ... whew! I love that you can just barely see one painted face as a clue to the event. Too bad she's drinking a Modelo instead of a Dixie. ;)

More revelers at our annual Carnival neighborhood parade Friday night.

My Roma beggar had been not just begging for money and luncheon vouchers lately, but she had also been begging for a photo session after her new baby popped out. But she disappeared for about 2 months for that and then in the depth of winter she was out begging with the newborn again. She had the little girl all wrapped up in various rags but would unwrap her to show her off. Then she disappeared for a couple of weeks and reappeared begging without the baby ("bébé malade -- hôpital"); I felt like telling her it was all her fault. And then she disappeared again. Her mother ran after me one day from her own work station in front of the McDonald's to ask me to be doubly generous because everybody was sick now... And then I didn't see her for another two months. Yesterday she told me she has hepatitis C and ....(*suddenly runs away to thoroughly scrub hands and arms*).... her globules are screwed up (in a way that I would understand only if I spoke Romanian).

All this to say that a finally took the photos today, and they look healthy enough to me.

They look so normal. Healthy and clean, and with beautiful smiles for the camera.
It's like they know that no matter what happens in their lives, these portraits you took, K2, will go on and on, and they wanted to look their best.

She certainly at one time could afford gold teeth.

K2 - Same French crackhead in the last photo on this report? Is Belleville anywhere near here?

That's amazing -- it does look like the same person. Belleville is not very far.
Posted by tod2 on Apr 12, 2011, 3:03pm
Well spotted Mark! It is amazingly similar. Pity we can't see her left hand with the ring. I can't see well enough to scrutinize her eyebrow piercing in the Belleville photo but then again this may be a much earlier photo (by some years perhaps).

She should be delighted with her photos Kerouac!

I'll set them up mick, you smash them to the boundary. :)

The images on this page are really brilliant....I especially love the portraits of the three young girls Bixa, all young girls go through a blossoming period don't they ? (mine was VERY brief but managed to nab handsome husband before I let myself go...)

I envy you your sweet little Grandson Tod...he's so sweet... ;D

K2, we used to have some Roma beggers here but I think that the police jumped on them and moved them out of the city centre, it was very difficult to see young women with tiny babies begging. I tend to just give to one begger a day when I'm in town, or donate to the Big Issue sellers (without taking one of their magazines!) I often get chastised by well meaning passers by who will say 'He'll only go and spend it on drugs/booze' etc..but how do they know?

I was pointing my camera to get a wide view of an area when I took this picture.

That photo did not turn out well, but as I got ready to flush it, I saw that the man in the striped shirt was smiling at me. People don't always realize that you can't really see them from behind the camera, and it's nice to catch these random bits of friendliness. He's just gotten up from having his sandals shined. He seems pleased and the shoeshine man seems pleased with his work, as well.

I was starting mindlessly out the bus window while it was stopped at a traffic light. Then I realized I was staring mindlessly at this man. Then I remembered I had a camera on me.

Your random portraits of people collectively make a nice portrait of the place you call home!
Posted by kerouac2 on Jun 11, 2011, 4:51pm
True -- that last photo has so much information about how you feel on a hot day, the need to keep the bus window open, the bright sun washing the blue from the wall.... Great picture.

Maybe not random, but unexpected. Neither of these guys fits the stereotype of the surfer dude.
(Though the old guy looks like he could have, as a young man.)
Posted by thill25 on Jun 12, 2011, 3:51pm
These are my surfing buds. Both surf way more often that I do...my wife snapped this pic with my LX3. I never surf with typical surfer types.
Posted by kerouac2 on Jun 12, 2011, 4:17pm
Oh, a wet suit would not look flattering on me either, these days.
