 Barcelona rooflines

I'm in Barcelona for a few days, and I find the rooflines catching my eye and my shutter finger.

Antonio Gaudi's constructions are well known for their striking decoration, here for example at the gatehouse of the Finca Güell

or the chimneys on the Casa Mila (La Pedrera):

But it must have been part of the culture before his time. Almost wherever I've been walking, buildings seem to have their (often top-heavy) decorative topping, whether it be turrets on the Post Office
[image]

finials lining up to draw the eye towards Gaudi's Sagrada Familia:

a Madonna engaging in what a British tabloid would no doubt call tot-dangling:

a pair of daffy gateposts::

Christopher Columbus waving mariners towards the Customs House
[image]

or a colourful crown to mark an otherwise unremarkable street corner:

You're a star Patrick - finding time to let us enjoy those rooftops et al! Thank you!
I couldn't help smiling at the dwarf (gnomes?) pedestal embelishment! Now I wonder if that was Happy, Sneezy, Dopey or..........

Excellent, Patrick. One might imagine that Gaudi was inspired by some of the things that he saw in Barcelona before getting down to his own business. :D

Casi, at some point during the year -- maybe in October ?-- there is a short period when Barcelona's Gaudi buildings that are usually closed to the public are open. A friend of mine went a few years ago and I remember it was in the fall.

This is so enjoyable and lovely, Patrick -- thanks!

I appreciated your comment about the "often top-heavy decorative topping", as I've often thought the same thing when seeing pictures of Barcelona. However, in good emperor's-new-clothes self doubt, I thought maybe I wasn't supposed to think that. ;D

However, I never made the connection between the older styles & Gaudi. That's great & enhances my viewing of the pictures.

"tot dangling" ;D ;D ;D

bjd, I wonder if the Gaudi buildings were open during the European heritage days, 3rd weekend in September (Journees du Patrimoine in France)?

No idea, Breeze. I believe my friend was there during weekdays. I just remember him telling me that he used to go early because the lines got long quite quickly.
