I don't know if you've come across these before, but anyway, a population pyramid is a way of visualising the spread of ages of the population of a country. Also the sex.

It is interesting that there is now, what has been referred to as, a youth bulge in many middle eastern countries. Normally you would expect that at the bottom of the pyramid would be many small children, this amount decreasing as the pyramid rose and the age increased.
However, this is not always so. In Algeria there is a clear bulge in the 20 - 35 age group, same in Morocco. This is even exaggerated in Tunisia, less so in Libya, more so in Iran.

There seems to be a clear trend that in the middle east the populations are 'overpopulated' by those in their 20's.
Check out European countries.
Notice the difference?
Now look at the poorer African countries.
Hmmm, interesting.

To throw a bit of an anomaly into the ring - look at Saudi Arabia, and then UAE.

So - click on the link, click on 'submit' first to bring up several tabs, click on the tab for 'population pyramids' if it's not defaulted to it. Select 2011 and the country and then 'submit'.
(You can check back a bit in the years but the permutations are endless)

That's really interesting and requires a lot of comparative clicking, which I am sure to be doing soon. France is also quite an anomaly in Europe since it is currently at a birthrate of 2.01 while most of Europe languishes well under 1.5 with diminishing populations.

That is most interesting. I looked up Mexico first, and there was no surprise in the bulge being in the 15-20 year old group. Then I looked up the US. I had thought that the largest population would have been in the older baby boomers, but it's actually in the 50-59 year-olds.

"Comparative clicking" K2? Nice use of alliteration there.
What I do is open several tabs from that site and then put a different country in each tab.
I still can't explain Saudi Arabia and UAE.

Ok then.
There seems in UAE to be three times as many men as women.

interesting... found an article on wikipedia about their demographics - that is indeed quite an extreme difference... well googled quickly and found an article saying that a part of it at least is the great number of south asian men coming to work in some middle eastern countries...

My guess also would have been the number of expats living in those countries.
