Hurricane Katrina made enormous headlines around the world and was a major news item for months. Then it faded from the minds of most people not in the area. However, the locals are still living in the aftermath, and rather than being rebuilt, a lot of the smaller towns are still rotting way. a post office a church a school a sunken fishing boat an apartment complex abandoned houses This is not to say that everywhere looks like this. Some of the old sections of New Orleans have been lovingly restored, and some new towns are slowly rising from the ruins. But the deep south has long been considered to be an American backwater, and decay has always been a normal part of the landscape. There are some other interesting photos here, as well as some beautiful photos of New Orleans.

My own home town in Mississippi was wiped off the face of the earth by Katrina as well. I went there about a year ago to see what was there now. Not much, really. this is the main street of town the shopping mall was here - the light poles of the parking lot held up quite well! a few people who lived in grand mansions are living in small trailers next to the ruins

Those big old mansions overlooking the Gulf of Mexico were beautiful to behold.
Kerouac, was the house with the gorgeous green enameled tiles in your town?
