Part One: Hotlinking (For the record, hotlinking is somewhat unethical. It's included here as a learning tool for posting.)
Go to Google Images -- http://images.google.com/imghp?hl=en&tab=wi -- and pick out a picture.
Click on your selection, & when the page opens, click on 'See Full-Size Image' at the top of the page.
When the page with the picture appears, copy the url that's in the address bar at the top of your screen.
Go to a thread and click on 'reply' under the last message. (Use Reply instead of Quick Reply so you'll have access to the Preview feature.) You can also use New Thread, or Modify, if they are appropriate applications.
Paste the copied url into the message box and highlight it.
Now, look at the two rows of square buttons above the message box, and choose the 4th one from the left, bottom row. (It has a little picture of a picture on it.) Click on that.
Your highlighted url will now have a set of brackets containing code at either end.
Now click on Preview.
You'll get a new page with your message in the box, and above it what the message will look like when posted. You can continue changing it andl Previewing it, or you can hit Post Reply.
You will want to check the size of any image you post. Many of them are too large and cause slow loading and screen stretching problems for other members of the forum.
Images are available all over, not just on Google Images. Using Google Images is suggested above for the purpose of testing the picture-posting feature. However, you can hotlink images from anywhere on the internet by simply right-clicking on a chosen image, then selecting Properties and copying the "Location" url in Firefox or the "Address(url)" in IE.

Part Two: Hosted Images
You can get a url from anywhere on the net and post it by using the steps in Part One of Posting Pictures. However, for pictures whose stability is important -- such as one for your avatar -- it is far better to host the picture & use the url thus obtained.
Here is what you need to do:
a) use a photo saved on your computer or b) find a picture on the web c) "host" the picture to a hosting site d) use the url from the hosting site to post the picture on Any Port
When posting pictures on Any Port, it’s recommended that you Preview your message before posting it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A photo hosting website is a service which allows users to store their photographs in a server, thus saving space on the users’ computers. The service provides codes so that the user can allow others to view his pictures.
There are quite a few of these hosting sites. You can ask among your friends for recommendations, or start a thread in Any Port asking for input. Although many sites allow you to host pictures on them without registering, it is better to register in order to always have access to your stored photos and to the full range of services offered by the hosting site.
Below are directions for using ImageShack, Photobucket, and Flickr to post images on Any Port.

Once you've uploaded a picture, ImageShack gives you several url options. The one you will always want for posting pictures on Any Port is Direct, displayed prominently at the top of the page.
Paste the url into the message box, highlight it, then click on the Image button above the message box. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
http://photobucket.com/
With Photobucket, roll your mouse over your hosted picture on their site to see the options, then click on IMG Code. The [img] coding is included in the url so you skip the steps of highlighting & clicking the image button. Simply paste Photobucket’s IMG url down & you’re in business. Note however, that if you want the image for your avatar, you need to choose the Direct option to paste in the avatar slot in your Profile.
Photobucket’s Bulk Uploader is extremely useful for creating photo essays and illustrated travelogues.

http://www.flickr.com/ Using Flickr, you will want to leave off everything that comes after “jpg” in the url.
