This is to explain the items and settings in the profile section. You can access your profile by clicking on your highlighted name anywhere in the forum or by clicking on Profile in the top menu. You can see anyone else's profile by clicking on the highlighted name of that person anywhere it appears in the forum, but you can only change your own profile.

You can change items in your profile as often as you like. To access the options below, enter your profile, then click on Modify Profile.

User Name: This is the name you entered when you signed up. If it’s not how you wish to be known, you can change it in the bottom slot of this section (Display name).

Location: Where you live, if you want this shown in the mini-profile that others see when you post.

Website Name: Not necessary to fill this in, even if you want to show your website. Just provide the url in the next slot, (Website URL) and a clickable icon will show in your mini-profile.

Avatar: There is a drop-down menu of pre-set avatars. You choose one or opt for “none”. You can change it whenever you wish. Select “none” if you will be using a personalized avatar (see next item).

Avatar URL: This is for a personalized avatar of your choosing. Please read “Posting Pictures” -- there is an explanation of how to get a url for any picture.

Width/Height: Your avatar must be set no larger than 100x100. This means that the picture you choose can be any size. When the width & height are set on the profile page, your avatar will display in the correct size. You can estimate what the setting should be for a rectangular picture, such as 80x100 or whatever.

Personal Text: For entering a phrase of your choosing that you’d like to have displayed in your mini-profile. It will be under the avatar, if you’re using one.

Signature: This is a line in small type that will show up under every post you make. It can be a funny saying, or a clickable link, or anything within 400 characters.

Instant Messengers: This is so people can IM you even if they are not set up to do so with you in email. A little icon indicating IM will show in your mini-profile.

Show Signatures: If you choose no, you won’t see anyone else’s signature line.

Select Skin: This forum has a default “skin” – the color & background display. Several others are available. Choose from the drop-down menu.

Expand/Hide Sbbds: We don’t have any sub-boards, so just ignore this.

Dates & Times: It’s important to set these correctly so that everything will be seen by you in your time. This helps you tell not only which posts are newer, but when they were posted relative to your time.

EXTREMELY IMPORTANT: Whenever you enter or change anything in your profile, you will need to save it using the “Modify Profile” button at the bottom of the page in the far left corner.

Note that it is far too easy to come straight down & click on the “Delete Account” button accidentally!

Maximizing load speed:

If you are using a slow service and wish to browse Any Port more quickly, here are a couple of things you can do.

First, set your skin to the one called 'very plain'. Because it has no background image or special buttons, it will load faster.

If that is still not fast enough, set Show Images (under Account Preferences) to 'no'. This will mean that no avatars, or posted pictures, or forum graphics will show. These will all be replaced by text. If there are posted pictures you wish to see, you can reset Show Images to 'yes' long enough to view them.
