Why can't I talk about it? (A traveler's rant)

Traveller63,
Somehow I've never thought of this thread as 'old' and think it should almost always be 'on top'. Tonight, I have finally understood that forums such as the Port are made for those of us who travel and suffer from the bored expressions of friends. I almost feel that you are preparing yourself for your trip to Paris in the fall and coming home to blank expressions.
C'est la vie. You will not find blank expressions here. I am very intrigued with how you will react to Paris this time around. With each of my trips, I leave feeling that there is so much more I want to do. One month in Paris I wrote a 40 page single spaced journal. The next month that I spent, was so much more complex that I still haven't written about it. With your trip, there will be level upon level of reaction, mine will be extremely different from Kerouac's, Lagatta's and bjd's will be somewhat in the middle.
But, I still feel that there are many reasons why our friends 'shut us down'...some people can't afford to travel, are locked into job schedules, the kids, health issues, they are depressed and just can't cope with listening etc.
I agree with Gyro (of many posts ago) in a few ways. Extensive travel does not necessarily imply higher intellect/curiousity etc. I know a few people who travel extensively and I wonder why they bother! (always expensive hotels in whatever country, seldom mix with the locals, have no desire whatsoever to be in the given culture). Not only do you need curiosity and excitement about another culture, you need time and you need money. This is not easy for most people.
Travel is beautiful and I love it. But I think of Jane Austen who never travelled more than about 50 miles from her home. She travelled worlds within her writings. Today, we listen to this woman who never travelled more than 50 miles from her birthplace.
