Socotra Island is officially part of Yemen, but geographically, it is a broken off tip of the Horn of Africa. It's surprising that it has not appeared in any films as an alien planet, because it annihilates any notion about what is considered “normal” for a landscape on Earth. It looks like another planet - or a completely different era of Earth’s history. Just like the Galapagos Islands, its isolation has created a completely unique flora, some of which dates back 20 million years. Better go there fast... tourism is picking up.

How strange and beautiful. To me, it looks like another era of Earth's history. (Casimira and Bixa are probably booking their flights at this moment....the first lap of the journey en route to staying with Kerouac in Paris.)

Oh my gosh! You're right -- it's amazing that this place is not as well-publicized as the Galapagos.
It was rather cruel to wave these photos under my succulent plant loving nose!
