Dahlias, my favourite summer flower, because they were my grandfather's pride and joy in Lorraine.

Your sweetpea photo resembles a watercolor. I try to imagine the fragrance.

Gogeous bjd...I see that you have a lovely lantana mine are languishing in a pot with this dismal weather we've been having. Hard to believe it was 30C here this time last year! That's a yummy dahlia Mick, I much prefer the 'singles' to others tbh.

Oh, Bjd! I cannot believe what you all have achieved in that garden in such a short time. Your flowers and plants are beautiful and look so happy. They undoubtedly appreciate that you kept the statue of Flora.

Stunning Cheery!
We arrived home this afternoon after a week away for my husband's surgery. We were fortunate to have a few volunteers to water our gardens and planter boxes. When we left, I had concerns the begonias in the planters boxes were failing and that we would have to replace and replant when we returned. But, with the tender loving care they received they more than doubled in size and look so healthy!
We planted 3 new rose bushes (a gamble lakeside, but tucked them in a sunny spot near a small trellis fence) even though they were full of buds, we were apprehensive they would flower but they were all blooming today! Everything just looked fabulous. Apparently we had a few days of heat that they were desperately craving due to the cool wet spring we had experienced.

Yes, always a challenge in your climate zone, mich (considerably colder than Montréal's). Two of our co-op members have backgrounds in horticulture (one works at the Botanical Gardens) and both are from colder zones (one in Saguenay, the other in Gaspésie) so they choose hardy plants that succeed well here. Montréal is a microclimate both due to the high population and being an island where two large rivers meet. Were you driving or did you have a friend or relative helping you? Hope all is well now...
I'm thrilled to see all these beautiful flowers and plants. I have only balcony flowers and herbs. What we can do with the back garden is limited, as there isn't much light on that side.

It was wonderful Bixa, we put some extra work into the gardens this year and were excited to see how a week of warmer weather brought out the blooms! Even the forests around our home are now quite thick and full. He is recovering well so far, thank you! Yes, always a challenge in your climate zone, mich (considerably colder than Montréal's). A challenge indeed, especially when you try plants that are really not designated for our zone. I guess an experienced gardener likes the challenge of giving some of them a chance. You never know, in the right spot where it gets the right amount of sunshine or protection from frost, one could get lucky, we are hoping! That is why we gave the roses a try, I have heard they usually do well near the shore. Interesting explanation about the microclimate in your area. My husband drove, I have no confidence driving in Toronto unfortunately. We planned an extra night in Toronto in order for him to be more rested to make the 2 hour drive to Niagara where he rested and spent time with family. His cousin came from St. Catharines and stayed with me waiting through the surgery and stayed overnight with me at the hotel. My sister took the Go train down from Barrie and my brother-in-law and his wife also came, lots of support.

Here's what is in bloom right now in my garden/terrace. Lavender, hollyhocks, balloon flower, bacopa, verbena, roses. And this is what a hailstorm can do to hosta's. This was the first year they hadn't been eaten by the dozens of snails in our garden.

Love your beautiful old-fashioned flowers, Amboseli. Everyone knows that hail waits until all the foliage is at its peak of perfection.

That is a droopy red and white gladiolus, Mick.
I like your dahlia with the dark leaves.

After reading lots of garden design information in the past year or two, I have been trying to buy plants with various foliages, preferably dark ones, to add interest. I bought a couple of black carex a few weeks ago. As they grow, I will divide them and use them along the edges of the flower beds.

Wow wow wow that hibiscus really is stunning Kerouac, they're one plant I'm going to be looking out for at the garden show I'm going to in a couple of weeks. Your dahlias were a bargain Mick! They really are lovely.
I've given up trying to grow hostas amboselli...hot because of hailstorms but because of the slugs and snails. If we had a bigger garden I'd have a wildlife pond so that the frogs could eat the little devils. We do get hedgehogs and woodmice in the garden but they're not resident (dog wouldn't allow it) so they dont keep on top of the snail problem!

I failed to comment on your hibiscus, Kerouac, which is lush! You change the dirt out in that window box every year, don't you? Must be that plus a really green thumb. The color combinations of bloom and foliage in that dahlia are so rich. Bjd, I love foliage and your comment made me remember there is a thread here on it: anyportinastorm.proboards.com/thread/4232/foliage

Thanks, Bixa. I had forgotten about that thread.
It's also thanks to you that I subscribed to Houzz. The US houses are huge compared to mine, but they do have interesting gardening ideas.
