I usually have to buy kiwis rock hard and wait about two weeks to eat them. Unfortunately my memory is not two weeks long, so unless I keep them visible at all times, you know what happens.

Kiwis are a problem. If they are too hard and unripe, they aren't good, but when they get soft, they get mushy and I don't like them like that. I buy them weekly and they are local, so probably riper than you find in supermarkets. That said, I really like kiwis and eat one every day at breakfast during the season. They will soon be over until November/December though.

Bjd, I think if you get a really over-ripe kiwi and start its seeds indoors, you might be able to set out the plants and later harvest kiwis at their peak right off your fence.

Oh thanks Bixa - I get Charley horses more often than I like! Bloody sore when it hits the inner thigh. Sometimes it can be so severe it bruises the muscle for days.

And how do you know whether you get male or female plants, since kiwis need a male plant for females? They grow here but I have no room in my garden for more climbing plants.

I think if you plant the seeds out of any kiwi, you'd be bound to get both male and female plants.
I see a smoothie in Kerouac's future.

No Kiwis for me - thank you. It's not the taste so much as the texture. I think I was put off when I ate the flesh close to the skin and in was sour almost like a plum at the pip. I also ate one when it was over ripe and kind of floury. Oh yuk yuk!
But I big delivery of Plantains came in today so I was able to buy one to try out. The previous plantain I bought was filtched off the kitchen window sill by a monkey....wonder what he thought of it!

Frot is an Afrikaans (Dutch) word for rotten. It is also used to describe a person's actions or attempts at something. Even in an English conversation the word frot is used.

I finally started buying strawberries. I should have done so earlier, but I always want to be sure that the season has really started because the first ones on sale are always the tasteless hothouse abominations that make you never want to buy strawberries again.

I bought my first cantaloupe of the season today. They are still coming from Morocco at the moment, but the price has plummeted and they look pretty good.

There are green melons, but they are not called cantaloupes. There are different names depending on the country. In the U.S., I remember the name "honey dew melon."

Yes, I remember the name 'Honey Dew Melon' is used here to describe the pale green inside of the pale cream outer skin. The orange ones with the beige wrinkly skin are called Spanspek melons here.

In Provence, the region of peaches and apricots, I have not bought any because they are rock hard. However, the yellow plums are excellent and the cantaloupes are like basketballs at giveaway prices.

I have been surprised by the saturn/doughnut/flat peaches in the supermarkets here. They are from Spain & are sometimes quite hard when I buy them, but ripen quickly and nicely just setting out on the counter.

I have discovered that those giant fruit bats like banana more than any other fruit including pear, apple, or oranges. Tonight I will tempt them with peaches. It is a wonderful experience to have them swooping to and fro just missing you in the chase.

i keep reading these articles about how fruit is supposedly unhealthy because of the sugar it contains ... it always confuses me a bit - after all, don't you have to eat a lot of fruit to get to the same amount of sugar you'd have in chocolate or similar food? Google says an apple contains 10 g of sugar - and after an apple, i am usually full ...

Fruit does contain sugars but fruit also has lots of minerals, vitamins, fibre etc Bananas have lots of potassium...I think that potassium is essential for ion transfer across cell membranes (but I could be making that up) So whilst fruit may have sugar in it the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. I reckon the important thing is to eat a balanced diet rather than eating fruit to excess..it still contains calories...so I tend not to have smoothies too often.
We have alpine strawberries in the garden atm...tiny explosions of strawberry sweetness, and loads of blueberries so we're eating those. My current favourite fruit to buy are conference pears...I love them when they are crisp and hard...nom. Marks and Spencer's sell amazing 'sapphire' raspberries...huge and sweet they are.

you are right about a balanced diet ... but of course every food contains calories, and i suppose it also varies for different types of fruit ...
didn't know you can also call them alpine strawberries! i had some on the balcony, but they were good exactly while we were on vacation ...
