I scored a bottle (more than one, to be honest) of Floc de Gascogne in a liquor store ... in the Netherlands, of all places. Had a glass this afternoon in my sunny garden, and reminded me of our stay in Les Landes of last summer.

I've never had a Séguret as far as I remember, but they sound very good. I have had wines from Les Baronnies; they were fairly ordinary, but good for that type. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%A9guret_(C%C3%B4tes-du-rh%C3%B4ne_villages) The rosé sounds very interesting and indeed right now a glass (or two, or...) with some Southeast Asian food sounds very appealing.

We had dinner with our daughter for her birthday. I had stolen a bottle of 1998 for the occasion. A listrac médoc. Nice label. Wine ok.

The problem with mentioning wine -- especially here -- is that just about all of us are completely ignorant about what is exceptional. The date is what impresses us. I still remember how shocked I was when the very first wines came out with a date beginning with 20 instead of 19.
To debase myself, I will admit that I will be drinking a cheap Pays d'Oc rosé tonight. What makes it a bit exceptional is that it is my first rosé of the warmer season that is almost upon us.

Yes. But shit getting old is just old shit ... this wine was a cheap correct wine it is now an old correct wine. You can even still but it - fir 45 €. So not bad : 900% increase in 20 years ...

On Saturday night a friend made me a cocktail I have never had before. A Caipirinha. Made with cachaça which is a distilled spirit made from fermented sugarcane. The cocktail contains an ounce (or a bit more!) of cachaça, sugar and lime over ice. I enjoyed it very much. It might be well known by others here but a first time for me.

I discovered it for the first time when I visited my friend in Brazil. Drank many many of them. You can actually use different kinds of fruit -- pineapple, passion fruit, orange... Since then, I do make it from time to time at home. Whenever there is a special on cachaça at the supermarket, I pounce on it.

I first had that in Amsterdam; Brazilian colleagues had carried some there. It was tasty, though I don't really seek out cocktails. I think it was at the very beginning of the 2000s; the times of the Social Forums ... Fora? Indeed, in Brazil.

Yes to you both! She did mention that the origins of the liquor was Brazilian but it was a cocktail she was served at a couple of places in Costa Rica. She did find a bottle of cachaça at the grocery store there before they left as each year they have tried to get one at the duty free and they were always out. A popular choice!
I am now eager to try it with other fruits, I think I may like it with passion fruit.

Supermarkets in Paris generally sell two or three different brands of cachaça (which is why there is a bit of competition for promotions). Although the most popular cocktail in Paris is the mojito since about 3 years ago, I think it is quite likely that the caïpirinha will move to the top sooner or later. It is already on the cocktail list for any place that sells mojitos.

My problem is that I know how to say caïpirinha (people usually use the nickname "caïpi" anyway) but I do not have the slightest idea how to pronounce cachaça.

I just finished a half glass of chilled rosé. I bought it, along with a mystery red (blended), from the same Spanish company because they were amazingly cheap on sale today. Well, really they were amazingly cheap, one might even say suspiciously cheap even before they went on sale. It was a 2-for sale, so I got two of the rosé and two of the red. The red may turn out to be paint stripper, but I am kicking myself hard for not getting more of the really lovely rosé.

It being Sunday, I just accorded myself a rum and cola, but I tend to forget that West Indian or Indian Ocean rum from France is generally at least 100 proof and a smaller dose than usual should be poured into one's glass.

Difficult evening. Belgian champagne (tradition Chardonnay whatever) Then a bottle of côte rôtie 2011. Fab. Then a haut medoc 2007. Very good but not as good as the côte rôtie. No man amongst the guest so no hope for a calvados.

I figured you had gone to Italy -- AnyPort was awfully quiet yesterday.
We just finished a bottle of Priorat, a red wine from Catalonia. Good but quite tannic and we drank it over several meals.

We had some champagne tasting at avize close to Reims. Brought back tow dozens bottles from local suppliers. 12 much cheaper than M&C and ok and 12 about same price but much better. We should be on for some time we don't drink much champagne.
