Russian cocktails disappear, going underwater, and are replaced by Ukrainian ones...

Ha ~ just now seeing the revised, heart-in-the-right-place drink menu. Sometimes I think I'm a little bit of a genius. Right now I'm drinking a delicacy I've named Diamonds & Rust. It features *drumroll* a gin from Oaxaca! Yes, an actual gin finished in mezcal barrels from my very own state. revistad-arte.com/2021/12/07/cantera-verde/Anyway, this is a tiny drinky which I'm trying to make last as I enjoy it with mini pretzels. Diamonds and RustPut a healthy 2 ounces of Cantera Verde into a martini glass, stick it in the freezer, then go off and do something else. When you're sure everything is icy cold, come back, remove glass from freezer and, working quickly, add: scant half-ounce of Lillet Blanc juice of half a small lime Give it a swirl with the knife you used on the lime, then go enjoy it while the glass is still frozen.

We had a bottle of Uruguayan red wine called Pedregal yesterday. It was alright, nothing fantastic but easily drinkable.

Your sophisticated-sounding libations make me feel like a lowly beer-swilling philistine! That's a nice thing to say, but worry not ~ in my well-rounded way I am also a lowly beer-swilling philistinette.

If non alcoholic glass-fillers are allowed, I’ve been experimenting with sun tea lately, using fruit tea bags and green tea bags. Too hot for hot tea, and trying to limit alcohol consumption a bit. (I follow the tea with a gin and tonic most days.)

Oh well that definitely eliminates the alcohol.

After today's unseasonal heat, it seemed appropriate to have vodka and vermouth on the rocks with a twist of lime after dinner.

We opened a bottle of Argentinian malbec wine yesterday to go with lunch, but it's a bit warm for red wine these days.

I'm right about Argentine malbec, aren't I? Even though it's sweltering here, I've had it a couple of nights with supper. Daytime is too hot for anything except water or maybe beer. Off to the fridge to get yet another glass of Schweppes mineral water, which is somewhat of a mania for me.

I spoilt myself with two bottles of Riesling at a price I would not normally pay. Two different suppliers but not much difference in the taste. Both equal in deliciousness!

Bixa, the Argentine malbec was produced by someone with a French name, Bousquet. And the malbec grape originated in the area of Cahors, France. It's true that I discovered it in Argentina though and only learned where it originated later. Yes, it's good and we'll have more today.

Further down the thread, at 1792, Whatagain said, As for Malbec, you explained why i like argentinian better.

Bixa, I had to go back a bunch of pages to find what you had said about Argentine malbec. So sorry if I repeated myself -- I searched after posting.

bjd, the reason you couldn't find it is because the Search engine built into the forum is pure poo-poo. I don't know how many times I've gone crazy because I know something is here but the useless Search engine says "nope". Google can be far more helpful. I got back to the posts quoted above by remembering key words used and writing this into the Google search engine: malbec cahors tannins anyportinastorm.proboards.comThe very first hit Google gave me was what I wanted!

I confirm that Google often works better when you remember a specific phrase from here and also add "any port in a storm" to your search.

Seeing that I had a nearly full bottle of cachaça under the sink (and know that there is a full one in the bar), I decided that I needed to make a caïpirinha (maybe two) to assist me in tolerating the first Eurovision semifinal tonight.

Hot and miserably dry here. I've been out transplanting, watering, and cleaning up a big messy, dusty area. Fortunately, because sometimes I think ahead, I stuck a martini glass in the freezer, in anticipation of a reward for my gardening efforts.
Loud & Bright
Clip three small sprigs of rosemary & slightly muddle them in a shaker. Put four ice cubes into the shaker and pour over them: 2 + a scant 3/4 ounce of Roku gin A scant ounce of Martini Bianco vermouth A couple of good hard shakes of Regan's orange bitters Give all of that a vigorous stir, then add 1 ounce of mineral water. Stir gently & strain into a frozen martini glass.

I was pleasantly surprised to be summonsed to view the new delivery of Riesling wines at my local supermarket bottle store. For months I have been complaining that there was all the Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Rose', and the rest on the shelves but not one Riesling. I popped in to get some wine for the weekend and selected three wines. Just as I was leaving the Manager walked in and said "Come with me" - And took me to a shelf of Riesling wines. I immediately took 4 bottles and made him refund the other plonk I had selected. I went home so happy!

Kro = Kronenbourg. The French like to eliminate all irrelevant syllables. That's why McDonald's is McDo in France.

Last night I made a drink I'm calling ~ Hard Ball.
It was made more or less to deal with the fact that I sort of like Negronis, but consider them just too much -- too sweet, too bitter, and a hard blast of alcohol to boot. Also, I was watching the new Downton Abbey movie, so needed something to evoke the 1920s.
Over a bunch of mini ice cubes pour: 2 oz. The Factory rosemary gin 1 oz. Martini & Rossi rosso vermouth 2 hard shakes of Peychaud's bitters
Stir vigorously and drink.
The reason for the name is because I stupidly had two of them, although I added water to the second one. It mellowed the taste, but of course did nothing to lessen the alcohol content. Not only did I feel the effects, but woke up in the night with an axe in my skull. You've been warned.
