Wow, ladies ~~ maybe a palace or two needs to be added to the port! Or you could just adorn us with proboards badges. ;D ;D I have been begging for a APIAS badge for years now HTMB...to no avail. I've since reconciled myself with "we don't need so stinking badges".

I certainly agree with that....no to badges, and no to "Like" buttons. Those things drive me nuts.
Heck, I still haven't figured out what all the buttons are here to begin with (like....what's the little battery shaped button with numbers in at posted in the upper right of the page?)

I understand all of it except for the little battery. What's that for, Bixa?

JEEZ.. for the record, I was only speaking in jest about having badges HTMB, and thought you caught that. I cannot fathom, comprehend, and most especially I applaud the dedication and enormity of technical support our administrators have provided us with, in particular, our "Wizard". I'm a bonafide "Luddite" and any problems I've ever had have always been addressed in a most timely, professional, efficient fashion. We are very fortunate and I am most grateful for that. We all should be.

Casimira, I totally got what you were saying and enjoyed the joke. Really, I did. But because our little fun carried to a new page I thought I would clarify the joke for anyone who wasn't quite sure what we were saying.

Besides, who needs buttons and badges when you can wear one of these around the house. Sentimental value: Priceless

"Ruby slippers' would be more appropriate. I appreciate your response. Anyone who knows me well on this forum knows that because I have been fiercely committed to it, and the folks I have come to know, despite my 'flighty' tempermentalism will understand and appreciate the defensive, territorial stance I have taken on occasion to defend it's perceived flaws and technical flubs. It's all good.

I see what t does now. The last time I'd clicked on the icon was before I had upgraded my tablet software. Nothing happened when I clicked. Now I get a whole set of choices, so I'm assuming the upgraded made a difference.

I just realized that I no longer see any of those icons on this computer. I used to see them. I'll have to check on my other laptop.

Ah -- interesting, Htmb! I think you're on iOS, right? I'm on android & don't think I've tried clicking that icon from the tablet.
Do you use the proboards app, or just access it the regular way? I've stuck to the regular way on my tablet because from what I've read on the Support board, it looks as though the app is pretty buggy.
re: your delightful suggestion of just the right thing to wear around the house ~~ yes, yes, I totally agree! On particularly rocky days, I find it helps to accessorize with a scepter.

No, I've never tried the app for the same reason. It's gotten really poor reviews.

A few weeks ago, an African brothel opened on the bench in front of the entrance of my building. I don't know if it is expansion from the situation 2 metro stations away at boulevard Barbès or if some of the workers have been driven away from that area. I don't know where the services are rendered, but I presume they must have access to a few basements in the neighbourhood.

I have a tendency to read too quickly, which often gives me a double-take at what I thought something said. Just now I glanced at #522 above & chuckled at what I took as Kerouac's wit in referring to the working girls as "boulevard Barbies".

Questa, the jars & bags contain sal de gusano (worm salt), a ground-up combination of chile, salt, & the dried grubs. I understand the worms can be served fried or in a sauce, but it would get pretty expensive to serve them that way, so it's more common to encounter them as flavoring in a sauce. This is the season for buying them fresh, but they can be bought dried out of season, pulled off a string in the amount you request. For their size the worms have an amazing amount of flavor. I once used one from a bottle of mezcal in three different salsas! (size is @as shown in 2nd pic above) Here's a recipe for a very representative salsa + some more info on the worm: cookingwithabroad.com/2011/04/salsa-de-chile-pasilla-de-oaxaca/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maguey_worm

Bixa - Apart from the red colour the worms seem very similar to the meal worms I keep for my garden birds! NO, I don't think I will try and create a dish with them any time soon ;D I pounced on this dear old gentleman as soon as I saw his clothes! He absolutely loved it when we all oo'd and ah'd over his clever coat made of (I think) a carpet!

they would be full of protein, too. I loved eating the skinny little eels found in the wet rice padi fields. About as thick as a pencil and up to 20cm long. They would die out of the water so we just washed them and drop into a deep pan of hot oil. They would curl up, turn blackish and had the consistency of rubber bands! Great flavour and full of iron and protein. Used to be given to sick kids, athletes etc for extra nourishment.
Indonesian name is belut

That carpet coat is fantastic. I remember the time when we would wind up the girls by asking them if that posh new dress was made from old curtains ;D

I think the carpet coat is perfectly set off by the camouflage pants, red and blue football shirt and white joggers. But he has the dignity to carry it all off.

I can remember standing in the Mediterranean with my mother as she showed us how to use a pin to get yummy sea snails out of their shell. That kind of goes to prove that we're open to foods positively introduced to us as kids. I'll eat snails, oysters, all kinds of shellfish, but balk at eating the maguey worms unless they're disguised. You're obviously very open minded, which I envy.
Re: the carpet coat ~~ yes -- what Questa said!
What's really cool is that the outfit seems a nod to some (tribal?) tradition, yet no animals were harmed in its making.
He seems to be in your shop. Did he come in to get stuff for a new creation?

That is one cool coat. Of course in the 1970's I wanted an Afghan coat when they were in hippie style. Luckily, I was basically too reasonable, and they were also a bit too expensive for me ($70).
