Frank McCourt, author of "Angela's Ashes" died this morning after a long illness. I never did read this memoir. My mother was a huge fan. Another memoir,"Teacher Man" about his years teaching in the NYC Public School system always aroused my curiosity.

I'd recommend both books, especially Angela's Ashes. He also wrote a book called 'Tis that continues his story after Angela's Ashes. I started reading it, but I never really got into it.

I'm so sorry to hear this. He was a good man. I also read both his books Angela's Ashes and 'Tis. The movie of the first book always makes me cry.

Although it has been claimed in Ireland that conditions in that country had been vastly exaggerasted, as described by Frank McCourt - I can say with my hand on my heart that in my experience, conditions were bad in Dublin in the 1960s.... I never went to Limerick, the site of that book but it must have been similar or even worse than Dublin. I know that McCourt wrote about times in the 1930s and 40s and I cannot vouch for this but from what I saw, he can't have been too wrong. Anyway it's really only Limerick people who are horrified at what he wrote

Angela's Ashes was absorbing and moving. This was a rare time when I found the film did justice to the book. 'Tis' did not fully involve me in the same way.
