This has been bothering me for some time.
What were "boom boxes" called before they were called boom boxes?
It seems to me the term came along in the early or mid-eighties, but for the life of me I can't remember what they were called before that.
Portable tape players? I dunno.

Well, that was an education! I guess I called them something like "stereo cassette player". I remember the first time I heard "boombox". It was from a high school student, & I had to ask what it meant.

I have never heard the term boom box, they are known here as ghetto blasters too.

I think the term boom box was invented only after teens from the fancier neighborhoods started annoying people with them. Before then, everybody called them ghetto blasters.
