Oh my goodness. It's a shame this word has been so overused, as only "awesome" truly describes those pictures!
The article is extremely interesting, as well.
I have always dreamed of riding in a helicopter, with the crowning touch to be flying as close as possible to an active volcano. This series of photographs is about that dramatic! Fascinating, SD -- thanks!
(it was interesting to see that the mouth of a volcano is called a caldera -- Spanish for cauldron)

Is this the right time to say that even though there was a major movie called "Krakatoa, East of Java" that Krakatoa is actually west of Java?

Every time I went to Yogyakarta, I always hoped that Mount Merapi would suddenly erupt. Actually, the last time I was there, there had recently been a strong earthquake, but I have only ever seen a small plume of smoke coming out of the crater.
