This is the first evening of winter time in Europe, so the night is suddenly descending over the city without pity. The first day is always a shock, even the second night. It takes some getting used to. But I kind of like it since I live in the "City of Light" and Paris is beautiful after dark, even if I rarely go out at night.
Very soon, the Christmas windows will appear at the department stores. That will be another shock.

We have the fire on in the living room because it's quite chilly today..we still only have a sheet and thin cover on the bed...might have to dig out a quilt sometime soon...not yet.

Oh, I had to dig out the duvet 2 days ago already, but probably just because I don't want to turn on the radiator yet.

What is the NRA doing about all of these mass shootings? Shouldn't they be distributing guns to all of the honest citizens to protect themselves?

Kerouac - You turn on the radiator, because last night we had to sleep with the aircon on... What is heating the radiator? - gas? hot water? How many radiators do you have in your apartment? Yes, lots of questions..

We turned our baseboards on November 4th, probably the latest date we have done so. Even the propane fireplaces were rarely coming on, they are temperature controlled at 19C but did not start coming on until about a week ago.

In one hour I will take on a new role as a make-up artist. My grandsons are coming over to get ready for the annual school play and I have been asked to apply their make-up. One is a mouse. The other has two roles: First as a 'Villager' and in the next scene, a sailor.

During the physical education classes when they were choosing teams, why did they never realise that the last kid or two that nobody wanted didn't want to play anyway?

They realized, but were just punishing us for not being enthusiastic participants in their sports.
What they SHOULD have realized is that it is CRUEL to choose sides that way if you go till only 1 or 2 are left. Long-lasting psychological damage can occur.
Maybe let each team captain choose 3 people - to give each team some athletic ability - then split the rest by random means.

I hated sport at school and was always among the last picked for a team. We always played softball and the keen players would happily swap positions with me so I was always at the end of the batting queue and never had to actually bat. When fielding, I would head for the furthest position possible and when everyone was busy I could fade into the nearby library. I don't think the sports teacher knew I existed.

I don't mind the physical exercise, it is just I didn't like the team games at school. The teacher was only interested in the skilled players and there was no coaching for the inept players like me. The school had little equipment and little interest for results.

I vaguely remember enjoying rounders (=children's baseball) and never had a clue at football (soccer) at primary school, but my grammar school played rugby. That was fine when I started because it had been a long hot summer and the ground was so hard there was no tackling, so it was like a glorified game of tag. Then it rained and they told us about tackling, and I went off the idea. For the next couple of years, the team lists for every Wednesday afternoon had me listed under "Remnants" (no child psychology nonsense in those days) and we just vaguely chased a ball up-and-down the edge of the field. And then they allowed me to start rowing: exercise you can do SITTING DOWN. My blog | My photos | My video clips | My Librivox recordings"too literate to be spam"

I'm going to blow my own trumpet here so move on if you don't want to hear how good I am. Sorry, was. Not any more.
Firstly, being a bit of an arse kisser, whenever it was me who had to choose the team, I'd always pick the worst player first. The reason being not that I hoped that person would gain some cred or feel better about himself, that was a by product. The reason being that the teachers would see what I did and ascribe better characteristics to me than pure selfishness and solely wanting to win. I was a "team player".
One time, during a five a side football tournament, it became known that I refused to pick one of our players from our pool of participants. Our PE teacher asked, in a stern voice, as to why. I told him that the lad (same age as me actually) refused to play with some of our players and was dictating to me who I should play, with him, on our team. I told the teacher I had told him that if that was the case then he can sit out all the matches and I'll never pick him. The teacher turned away and nothing more was said.
Trumpet blowing spoiler - there was not a school sport or team in any shape or form (apart from Netball) that I didn't represent the school at. Even during an inter-school competition I was playing basketball on one side of the sports hall and weightlifting on the other. Just to mention though, I was never 'very good' at any of this. I was just a journeyman at any sport. Well, apart from Hockey that was. I had a try-out for the County but legged up two of their players who were far, far better than me, and got sent off.

Played cricket for county, had football trial for Arsenal (spits in corner), played league tennis, club table tennis and disqualified on sports day for entering too many sports..

A lot of old people have had to get rid of their big old console television sets whether they wanted to or not. I wonder what they have done with the doilies that were on top.
