I am the one non-baseball fan in my immediate family. It is the same with me. (I'm also the only non-religious one, but that's a different topic.) Two brothers, two sisters and parents -- all huge baseball fans (Milwaukee Brewers). My sister has five kids all under the age of 9, and takes all of them to games all the time. I'll have to admit my nephew was cute when at two he could recite the whole starting line-up. You could give him a postition or a number and he tell you the Brewer. By three, he could do the same with the 1982 team.

Jeez, the Yankees are in such top form,it's frightening. Beckett allowed at least 6 HR's,one on the very first pitch! I was disappointed, I thought it would have been a much closer game but Sabathia was in clearly in command.

How many games in a season? I really know nothing about baseball. You can imagine which field they put me in when we had to play it at school. (But I was a damned good batter!)

162 games played per season with extra allowances for tie breakers. Nothing wrong with left field position IF you can play it.

It should also be noted that MLB has no time clock. The game is played until there's a winner, no matter how long it takes.

Thanks to both of you. Of course, they don't get too tired playing that game so it is normal that everything lasts longer.

Thanks to both of you. Of course, they don't get too tired playing that game so it is normal that everything lasts longer. Point of contention: Pitchers and Catchers get worn out faster than... say, a striker. It's a finesse game, and the last form of modern dueling. Otherwise, yes, that's generally true. The corners are generally immobile, the middle infield need to have great lateral speed, and the OF -- those are the guys who need "explosive speed" to react to the ball off the bat.

Do they still have 'fat' baseball players like in the old days? There are some "beefy" types but I wouldn't say "fat". My guys are hanging tight but so is the team behind us(Texas Rangers).

Yeah, what cas said. There are plenty of 'big' players, but few (if any) that I would consider fat. There are some very tall players, too. Prince Fielder, however, may be the closest you would get to being considered "fat."
Of course, by European standards, a lot of them are fat.

If a player is not performing due to his weight, then obviously he's not going to be allowed to play. Not exactly svelte

I was lucky enough to see Cecil Fielder (father of Prince) hit a massive HR all the way out of Tigers Stadium back in around 1992 or 1993. Cecil was a huge man with incredibly fast hands (particularly around the buffet table)
Bizzarely enough, I managed to have some time this weekend to sit and watch some MLB on ESPN, I think it was Saturday night here. I was amazed that it was The Braves and the bloody Phillies again!!!! Same two teams as I saw last week, grrrrrrrrrrr!!! Give me a break!

If a player is not performing due to his weight, then obviously he's not going to be allowed to play. Just ask Geovany Soto. In that picture, I wouldn't call the Babe fat. That looks closer to his "prime" years when he was 6'1" and 210, perfectly acceptable. This guy is fat.

It's too bad that he and his son are no longer on speaking terms; he apparently took a large chunk of Prince's first contract, as an 'agent' and has racked up obscene gambling debts in the years since.

Cubs managed to look good today and win, so that's my consolation for the day. A's one too, but that's lagniappe.
Boston is still in the lead for the Wild Card though, Cas! Rangers are on a roll though winning their last two, and are closing that gap; the Sox need to maintain that lead, and hope to hang on with the way the Yankees are playing.
With three more games together, your Sox could conceivably overtake the Bronx Bombers!

I know, but when I saw that game last pm I was dismayed. It is a very tight and exciting race. Tampa Bay changed pitchers so many times last night,I didn't check yet,but it looked like they wet through their whole bullpen.
It will be exciting to be in NYC while this is going on and getting the New York Post, rag that it is,I always read it while I'm there,it's so bad it's good, the back page sports stuff etc.
